Hand held digital tachometers

Postby BobS » Sun Jan 21, 2007 6:31 am

Ok guys I plan to install a tachometer sometime in the future. I want a way to calibrate it other than a wide open throttle blast. I have been watching various brands and prices in hand held digital tachs. All of the instructions are about the same. Put a reflective strip or a white painted mark on the balancer and scan the mark with the beam from the hand held unit. Anyone already have one of these? Most of the ones I have seen advertised are usually in the $80-125 price range. Today this one shows up in my email from a company in CA that I buy my computer related parts from:

What are your thoughts and opinions on this? This wouldn't need to be a rugged tool that gets used every day but does need to be accurate.

For that price buy two!
I have one similar (paid 99) and I find it a very uselful tool.
I've used it more around the marina than on the truck.

We have an expensive one at work that I "borrow" sometimes. I didn't know they were that cheap, I might buy one too!

I thought I had seen one lately. Went to Harbor Freight and it was there! $79 for almost the same thing. Definately going to buy one.

A silver drafting pencil works good for the reflector stripe.

I have the exact same tach. Heck of a buy IMO. Used it on all my small engines to get them where they should be and my CTD.

Just an update. The laser tach came today. I did a little playing around with it and checked the sensitivity here in the house. I took one of the adhesive backed reflective strips and placed it across the room about ten feet away and passed the beam across it a few times and it gave me a readout. Then I checked the range using masking tape and found it was about three feet. I will admit this is somewhat better than I actually anticipated. Now I need a warmer day to try it out on the Dodge.
