Pennsylvania's new (money making) traffic laws

Postby BobS » Thu Jan 25, 2007 4:00 pm

This is heads up for those of you who travel into Pennsylvania. Two new motor vehicle laws take effect this month.

1. Your headlights must be turned on anytime your windshield wipers are in use.
2. You are prohibited from operating a motor vehicle with snow falling or blowing off the vehicle - effective 01/26/07.

Do you folks have similar laws in your states or is Pa leading the way?

How do you prevent snow from falling or blowing off your vehicle in a snow storm?

That's exactly my thoughts! A good example is the driver of an eighteen wheeler who now has to figure out how to get up on top of a snow covered forty foot trailer and sweep or shovel it off before he leaves a rest area where he spent the night.

NY has had the "headlites when using wipers " law. You can thank NY's overpaid, under working politicos for that.
I always wondered, when you use interval wiper, do you turn the lights on and off? :?

Ct has had both those laws for some time now...never heard of anybody getting pinched for a violation.
So if your wipers are on delay....does that mean you have to flash your lights in time with the wipers?
Oh, never mind.
edit...I just read PToombs reply...

Illinios has had the wiper/light law for many years. I think that is a good law myself, but then again when its raining or snowing and I need to run the wipers, I turn on my lights. Its easier for everybody to see what is going on.

I'll bet the law about the snow is for people that leave their house trying to get to work with out getting the snow off the hood/roof of their car, that blows all over and disrupts vision.

What is really sad is that our law makers have to make these laws to keep stupid people from killing others with their laziness.

Exactly! I actually thought we had the headlight/windshield wiper law for a while, but it also makes sense from a saftely standpoint.

The snow law is intended for folk like my next door neighbor. Who,in his infinite wisdom, will get into said vehicle and actually drive 10 feet towards the road. Upon realization that he simply cannot see, will climb outside, and with the swipe of his palm, will clear an area approx 4x6 inches. Then, upon climbing back into said vehicle, will tear outta the driveway and onto the road faster than the Ohio State Bucks getting off the field after a National Championship game.

The laws intent is NOT to protect the dumb and ignorant. It's intent is to protect ME, the cautious driver who must share the same road.

Florida has the headlight law and it is a very good idea. I don't remember what snow is but I know we have no laws except that snow is not allowed here.

Here is the one that I think is the worst, how about if you were to get a DUI and had a CDL they are treating it like you are driving a commercial vehicle even if you are in a geo metro, double the fine/time....

It's not that part that bugs me, it's the fact that CDL drivers are held to a lower BAC even in their personal vehicle. If I get pulled over in my pickup with a BAC of 0.05, I lose my job and get my license pulled. If a non-CDL driver blows a 0.05, the cop says "Be careful on your way home, have a good night."

The headlight/wiper thing is an exelent law, IF its inforced. And I'll tell u why, as some of u know, I drive a tractor trailer, and from my viewpoint when it is raining, I CANT SEE YOU! I cant count how many times another vehicle has suddenly appeared from my tire spray when I begin to change lanes and get out of the grooves in the highway where the water is lying, had the driver had his lights on, I would have known they were there, PLUS, the mirrors on a Tractor tailer are horribly prone to collecting water on them so I still cant see that well.
TURN EM ON!
Now the snow issue, thats for those drivers that like to wipe a clean spot so THEY can see. Never mind the snow thats blowing all over the place that was left on the roof of the vehicle.
PA has acctually had a similar law for quiet some time now, WAY back when I got my first dually, the dealer got a ticket for having snow cover in excess of 4 inches on the truck.
Plus on the snow issue, how many times have you had to dodge or seen chunks of ice come flying from the vehicle in front of you from snow that wasnt brushed off, melted, then turned to ice? I see it all the time, especially trucks, I almost lost my windshield and or mirror yesterday from a piece of ice about 2 feet in diameter that blew off of a pickup, fortunatly i saw it n got on the brakes. Them things are like a saw blade thats been let loose.
I dont know how the guys with the trailers u cant reach on top are going to do it, but it should/needs to be done.
