whats your ag related job?

Postby rbrettctd » Mon Aug 25, 2008 2:22 pm

Im coming into my Junior year in college, and really have no clue what I want to do. It will be ag related for sure. Ive had a few ideas, but its always changing, so just want some clues of whats out there, so if you could give me a job title, description of what you do, and what your degree is in.

Ive been on a ranch since I was 2, so i love doing ranch work, but there is no money in it, and even thouhg they say dont pick your job based on money, my three prizes (rhino, dodge, and gf) require good income. Ive also thought about doing what my cousin does, land appraisal. He runs around to ranches all over the tristate (TX, CO, NM) appraising them. However that requires atleast a minor in finance and I dont know that I can handle that.

Currently I am majoring in Agriculture Services And Development, Industry/Extension option, which is essentially ag business without all the economics classes.

Your input/advice is greatly appreciated.

I know several soil samplests that make very good money and have pretty good schedules. I've also got a few friends that have done quite well working for Southern States. One as regional manager, and a couple do something with selection and sales of fertalizers, herbacides, and pestacides. I've got another friend that makes a lot more money than me running a grounds crew for a golf course. His degree is in agriculture with a minor in landscape architecture. I don't have any real specific info for you, just tossing out different ideas. Good luck.

And a slight twitch from the old days of DDT. Sorry Tim could not resist. All our AG jobs are gone around here. Maybe blueberrys in midcoast Maine or Potatoes up in norhtern Maine. Not many dairy farms left here either. We lost our last dairy farm in town here last year. We are turning into a retirement state it seems lately.

Randy, have you considered shoeing horses? There is a guy down the road from the school (Kentucky Horseshoeing School) that makes $3-400K per year. He is 30 years old, completely debt free (owns a nice house, truck, and some land), and could retire whenever he wants to. Of course, he is at the upper end of the spectrum (shoes 15-20 horses a day, handmades, and is home by 6 every evening), but 50-100K per year isnt unheard of, nor that out of line. There is an EXTREMELY high demand for GOOD farriers (not the $50 cheesedicks who slap shoes on, then trim the foot to the shoe if they didnt get the shoe just right). I am going for 22 weeks, then will do an apprenticeship for a year or two with a qualified farrier, and in that process, build my own business. Christina cant wait- she gets to quit her job and fix old houses when my income tops hers.

Just an idea. If you dont like horses or people, it may not be for you.

I deal with horses everyday here on the ranch and dont care for it. Im afraid I couldnt do it for a living. Ive done a little farrier work on our own, but thats it. Thanks anyways.
