end of the true diesels

Postby redneckroot » Wed Sep 17, 2008 8:20 pm

I'm going tomorrow to trade my jeep in on a 05 cummins to be my daily driver, don't worry the 90 wont ever leave, but after some research it hit me that the only chance i have at getting any kind of newer cummins with low miles before all of the pollution crap was to grab one while i still could. My father who has a 03 3500 wants to get one of the new 5500's but we can't seem to find any good resources to find out if running B100 will screw it up. If anyone knows that'd be a great help.

On a different note: I was thinking about all of this pollution crap and how the newest trucks are all getting roughly 14mpg and i've heard of fords closer to 9mpg. What I don't understand is that if my 90 averages 21mpg (empty) how is it not putting out less pollution per mile then a 2008 getting 14mpg. Wouldn't burning more fuel mean more going into the atmosphere? I understand that the newer ones have the pollution set up on them to cancel out some of the pollution but i would think it still would be putting out more if not exactly the same.

The fuel mileage has a lot to do with your horsepower too... Your '90 is 160hp stock, those new ones are what, 300? It makes sense that they burn more fuel.

I think all that emissions crap is a bunch of bs personally, so I try not to pay attention to it lol.

I have a 08 chevy one ton with a Dmax and a ally tranny. Sorry to admit this but it has so much pulling power it is puts the B to shame. I think alot of the help comes from the tranny. The 6 speed has deep first and reverse and shifts good and puts the power to the ground. I also have an identical 07 1ton thats a gasser and the difference betweeen those is huge. I have not really checked milage ( its a work truck ) but I did compare between the 2 1 tons I have. With the gasser plowing and sanding I get around 4.5 mpg and the LMM D max gets 5.5 doing the same job. I, to date, ( knocking on wood ) have had no issues with the DPF emmisions. You should hear this thing when it does its thing. I actuall crawled under the truck with it running because it sounds like a blast furnace when the DPF is cleaning things up. You would swear that there is fire coming out the pipe.

a friend who now has an 08 but has had a few earlier cummins dodges is getting 9 to 11 mpg around town and 14 on the hwy where his earlier 3rd gen and 2nd gen 24v would get 20 on the hwy. he drives a short distance to work lives in a big city and plugs up his dpf and so he took it to the stealership. they told him that every couple days he needs to drive to the freeway, [5 miles each way] then go 75 mph for a half an hour then turn around and go back at 75mph. so his 25 mile weekly commute has turned into what,,,,,,,,,,,,,,300 and some miles. like this is helping emmisions  damn the treehuggers and the epa.

since the extra hard hwy miles are mandatory and the mpg is no better than a gasser pickup this 08 sits [he'd take too big a hit to sell it now] and a used gasser was purchased to drive to work because he couldnt afford the fuel bill on the 08. he wishes he kept his earlier trucks.

i sure have no desire to drive anything but my 12 valves.

Well I bought the 05 just because A) I make my own fuel and B) I wanted to get a reliable daily driver with as low of miles as I could. Here in NY its hard to find a 2nd gen that has low miles and/or isn't a rot box. I'm sure I could buy one down south and bring it back but thats just that much more money in an unknown truck. I'm sure once my 90 is done I'll be driving it as much as possible during the summer months.

Fuel mile question: here is what I plan to do what should I be looking at fuel milage wise?
- Grinding the fuel pin/ whatever else I can get out of the pump
- Adding some big injectors 6x16?
- 4" exhaust
- BHAF
- S300 turbo
- The tranny is a 727 with a low stall converter, heavy clutches, shift kit

a buddy of mines parents just had a money explosion in his welding business and decided to buy a couple brand new cummins, they are identical except one has a 5.9 and the other has 6.7... they have roughly the same amount of miles and the same quality miles... the 5.9 without the blast furnace is the good old healthy carbon filled pipe, the 6.7 is just like silver bullet said clean as a brand new whistle, there is more dust in a week of not driving than soot

I saw a tractor trailer on the road over the weekend, stacks were clean. I could even see the rust spots inside the pipes.
I think I'd climb up and paint the inside of them.

All that means, is that the crap is burning and going into the atmosphere, rather than sticking to the pipe, ground, windshield of the passing cars...................Hell, I am so sick of scrubbing the back fender and rims on my truck i'm going to put stacks on it.
As far as I know, unburned fuel and ash isn't killing the atmosphere.
Anyone get a headache from the smell of the new diesels???? :?

our 09 kenworth has 40000 miles on it and the stacks are clean, and our 09 ford 550 has 20000 miles on it and the tail pipe is still clean too.

If you don't like cleaning that soot from the lower side of the bed then you definately don't want stacks. You won't be able to start the truck without getting the bed dirty.

yah, there are little bits of condensed soot balls that fall all over the place, i think its caused by the moisture, you might be able to keep it from happening if you get flappers, i want to get some 7" with flaps, if i get them in time ill let ya know

I was going to get dual 5", with a 6" steel manifold underneath. I don't mind IN my bed, it's the coating I get on the outside of my bed! The pipe is now in front of the rear tires, so the simulator is black all the time, and the dually fender too.

Just think, if it had a cat converter, all the soot would have burned and went into the atmosphere!
