is your wheel drive even working ?

many times the hubs can get sticky and not engage ..... or in the case of the late model first gen 1/2 tons ( as well as a few others ) , the vacume diaphram stops working properly .

the tranny will have little to do with how quickly you get stuck , assuming you know how to drive .

tires have the biggest influence on how a truck performs off road

garenteed if you put a set of 36 inch tall , 9.5" wide super swampers on your truck , you will scare yourself where it will go .... to the point that you might want to pack extra underware in the glove box .... even with open diff's

He was also complaining about poor performance and poor mileage, and more often then not, it's due to the almost 20yr. old tranny, although I do aggree that tires will have more to do with it offroad, I think his tranny is due for a "makeover."

Im assuming the 4wd is working. It better be when I have to take the time to jump out of the truck and lock the hubs in.That and normally I can see alot more debris being thrown from the front than the back, might be why the front digs down more than the rear..

as far as tires how would a set of 35x12.50's do on the thing?A buddy has a set of 35" mud tires that he isnt really using,I could pick them up for pretty cheap.

I had a brand new set of mud tires on my other 89. It sucked bad in the mud. Nose dive and it was all over. Imagine how I felt getting pulled out by a Jeep scrambler. I also pulled off the edge of my driveway and before the rear tires left the drive I was stuck up to the bumper on the front.

Well whatever they are, that beast now has 4 of them. I need to find an updated picture.

Mine seems to to just fine. Haven't had it in the mud yet but does good in about 8in of snow. Not realy offroading for the fun of it, I was dragging logs out of the woods for firewood with it. Had lots of fun puffing smoke and showing up a big dually powerstroke :D .
1990 W350 4X4 NOW INTERCOOLED 5-speed. Boost/Pyro. Few light tweaks to the pump. Now a dually with an aluminum flatbed!!

2 tracter tires thats pathetic.

take a look at the pics of the green subaru. http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n45/ ... u%20stuff/

that beast had 4 6.00X14R1 tractor tires(measured about 26" in diameter). So not only did it have you beat as far as tires go, it was a 4wd car.So that means I win. Then latter in life that car became a 4 door trucklet, then it sprouted 4 lights on the roof. That car with the rear diff welded was the best at going through mud.Between the tractor tires and its light weight (weighed 2000 lbs with driver and fuel) it would go though mud like no other.didnt matter if the mud was soupy swamps that would swallow chevies on 44" boggers the little car just drove right through it.More or less the light weight made it so it didnt really sink, then the tires hooked up so well they propelled the car forward before it had time to sink.Although with 80ish HP it didnt have the horsepower to break the tires loose.More thottle= faster through mud pit,it didnt fling mud on it all...
