Racing lobster boats is a lot like racing Diesel trucks.

Mildly retarded and not nearly as fun as racing something that should be raced, but nonetheless a niche that must be filled...

Hey Richie, have you ever seen the Rainbow Chaser run? Its the boat owned by Volvo diesel that they're always testing with. They usually run all the workboat races around here. Most of the local watermen that actually work their boats can't stand em, but they put on a good show for the spectators.

Nope. All these boats are " supposed " to be work boats. They all have to have trap hauling equipment. There are 2 boats that I know of that were built just for the lobster races. The loud one in the video named " CHRISTOPHER " actually is a working boat. His sternman had to where hearing protection while working on the boat. He actually fished it with no exhaust. Some of the big boats have 1500 to 1800 horsepower diesels in them. There are a few working boats around here that are 45 feet long 14 feet wide and they still run 40 knots. Its not uncommon for the engines to be $120,000 or more.

Most of the high horsepower boats run the engines all year long. They of coarse don't push them to maximuim all the time. " Christopher " runs a marine 502 chevy. That was his working engine. There is a guy now that runs a 600 plus inch merlin big block chevy. That is a race only boat. The worst reputation for boat engines around here is the 3116 cat and 3126 cat. In a boat they are 300 to 450 horsepower. They really suck. 5 thousand hours is about it. I know a guy that had a detroit 471 in his boat for over 20 years and never touched it. A guy in town has a 3208 cat with over 25 thousand hours on it. Another guy has a john deere with same time on it. Boat engines have a lot of load on them for sure but, the wheel selection is done so the engine can still hit the govenor wide open. Another words the engine never lugs down. If the engine can not reach governed speed then they put a smaller pitch wheel on.
