How many miles

Postby SuperSix-Two » Thu Jul 16, 2009 7:15 pm

Is too many miles for a Cummins/5-speed?

I'm looking for a rig to pull a trailer, and because I'm baised I'm looking at first gen dodges. I've seen a couple with 350-425,000km on them, and I'm wondering what kind of problems I'm going to have.

I'm not shy of doing regular matinence, but I can't afford to have it breaking down on me when I go on road trips.

I don't know the conversion from km to miles, but my truck has 285k miles on it and it's running stronger than ever. It's my daily driver, and I wouldn't think twice about driving it cross country.

The 91 D250 I used to have had like 300K KMs on it or around 185K miles. My current 91 W350 has around 225K miles on it, hard to say as the speedo hasn't work much for awhile so its not correct.

because i have a plethora of useless information stuck in the back of my head, i can tell you 1 mile =1.609 kilometers without having to look it up. now ask me where i left my keys and its a different story though

anyway, 425000 km is about 264000 miles. i dont think that is enough mileage to worry about as long as its been maintained correctly. maybe go through the getrag if it hasnt been done, and check the shims in the d70, but other than that just keep fuel in it and you'll be good to go.

mine has 400,000 miles on it and the motor runs fine. if it wasnt for other little stuff i'd be drivin it now. the trans went out so i rebuild that, then the lift pump was bad so i replaced that and then i found a broken head bolt so now the head is off gettin fireringed and ported. but before i had the head off it ran great.

well i will tell ya my truck has 265,765 miles on her this morning and at at 264,300i pulled the engine to do the rear main seal. i figured since i was in there i would do main bearings and rod bearings. i looked at the cylinder walls while i did this and they still had cross hatching on them. i pulled apart a chevy small block that had 75,000 on her and the cross hatching was gone. so im thinking these engines can be put through some hell adn still come out tuggin like a train. oh and that is with an auto that has been rebuilt and beefed up a little
