New Truck

Postby McNasty » Sat May 19, 2007 7:00 pm

I am thinking about buying a new truck. Diesel of course.
My options are any of the big three. I know, heresy.
But a new Dodge isn't like a first gen, so it doesn't matter.

It's going to be a quad cab. I need the extra seats for the critters.
Maybe a dually, I'm not sure.

So my question is what would you buy?

Thanks.

I would honestly buy a 1st gen!! I own an '02, my husband has an '00 Dakota, my buddy has a '93 and his dad has an '06. I have had problems with mine, VP44 and fuel pump. I have gone on the other forums to try and fix my truck and it seems the 2nd and 3rd gen. have more problems than the 1st gen. ever had. Just my .02. Test them all and get what ever you love!! Then post and let us know your decision. Take care!

Don't buy a Ford, unless it's a gasser. Too many known problems. I'm partial to Dodges and Chevys. I'm also honest enough to admit that Ford does make a nice truck, but the power trains suck.

Are you more interested in the truck or the engine? What do you want from the truck? The Ford is a very good truck (excellent suspension and some neat do-dads too) but the engine is experiencing some teething problems. I would give it a year if you really like the Ford best. The GM's have the smoothest ride, and the D-max is the quickest stock and with just a box. The D-max is not without its problems, but it has become a pretty solid engine. The Dodge has the Cummins. Need I say more? 8)

Sorry to be so long replying, out of town for work.
Being a first gen owner I'd have to say I'm partial to Dodges and especially the Cummins. But a new truck just isn't that same, so...

I had borrowed a buddies '06 Chevy crewcab dually a few months ago for a trip. Real nice ride and all, but it was rather hard on fuel. Not sure if this was winter and in 4x4 or the truck was just a pig. It was a Duramax with the allison tranny. Had some fun features on it.

Ford has a nice looking truck, but looks don't mean everything.

I think the Cummins is a superior engine. Inline is better then v in my opinion.

If I could get a brand new first gen, I'd snap that up in a second. Not possible, so I guess I just look around now until something catches my eye.

Thanks for your replies.

.02 more cents........I personally wouldn't go for a dually unless you plan on hauling a trailer or something. Cost too much for two extra tires, besides the fact it's harder to fit into a drive-thru

And a dually gets worse fuel mileage, but I wouldn't pull a trailer without the training wheels. 8)

Yes to both.

Am a little nervious with a "new" engine, but the chasis cab only comes with them.

Hopefully will last as long as my first gen. :?

Build yourself a good fuel filter setup and I don't think you will have any issues out of that truck. The 3rd gens have by far the stoutest drivetrains under them Dodge has ever offered and they ride, drive, and stop better too. I think you will be pleased with it :P except for the fuel mileage and initial cost.
