Light Comes On Early

Postby Ace » Mon May 05, 2008 6:33 am

Seems like low fuel indicator coming on early is pretty common. They are probably all like that, designed that way. I had the tank out a couple months ago doing some work and confirmed mine still has over 10 gallons in it after the light comes on. But it'll only ever be able to pull all but maybe the last 2-3 gallons because of the pickup being located right in the middle of a big, long tank. So that's probably why they had the fuel light come on with 1/3 tank still left.

Until I ran out a few months ago, I thought the tank size was around 24 gal. I put 28.8 in it that night. The gauge sender has a dead spot in it and apparently I had already passed the point when it comes back up from below E to the 1/4 mark. I'll fix it when I put the big lines in. ;)

It's my understanding that our trucks are supposed to have 30 gallon tanks. My 92 seems to support that. I've put 27 gallons in it before. The low fuel light had only been on for about 10 or 20 miles at that point. My 90 is a different story. The low fuel light comes on at about 21 or 22 gallons used (around 420 miles or so) and "runs out" at 25. I know that because I ran out on level ground and I bought a 2.5 gallon can, filled that and poured it in to get to the fuel station half a mile down the road. It then took another 22.5 gallons to fill it. Nothing like having a mom and her jr. high age daughter help you push your truck in the Arby's parking lot because you're dead in the middle of the Arby's driveway  .

Glad you enjoyed the story CK. I have a request for the future though: please convert crazy Canuck units (Metric) to Standard units so that I don't have to  . Lets see, according to one of my physics books, 1 gal = 3.788 liters. That gives us 100L / 3.788 = 26.4 gal for CK.

They all came with 30 gallong tanks, or they were supposed to.

I have put ~29 gallons in before.

I once drove ~640mi on about 28 gallons one time. Traded that truck for the blue truck I had at SOP1 & 2.
