My new project

Postby ahale2772 » Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:13 am

well I started thinking yesterday about how i was going to deal with the price of fuel this summer....still need to use the truck, a little car would be too much of a project...yada yada yada...about 3 hours later I was on the way home from Salem MA (the witch town) with an 81 xs400 cafe racer type project.

I paid 500 for the bike with three boxed of parts and a clean MA title. Its got 5500 original miles on it...and nope it dosent run. The Kid who had the bike was a renter at a gagarge that had just moved in and the previous renter (im told a custom bike builder) gave him the bike for cheep.

Kick start and disk brakes, good for reliability? porobably not, cool looking? definently

going to start by cleaning up the wiring/ cables, checking out the carbs and doing a regular service...it even came with the oners manual :D

anyone ever had an xs400?

looks like a fun project. I resort to 2 wheels when the weather gets better to save fuel as well. Hard to beat 50 mpg.

25 mph doesn't work out so well either. I still ride though, just with a little more care in the slower speed stuff

My boy had a cm400t honda basicly the same bike, ran good would have been a great little bike to have just in case you needed it for transportation
but NNNOOOOOOO he had to trash it.

I had a gs750 at the time and i liked riding the 400 better than mine.

I hear the xs400 is a tourquey motor and they sip fuel, thats all I care about. I know for a fact that if i had some 1100 monster I would drive too fast all the time.

Went to pay the sales tax at the registry yesterday and get my Permit. Failed the first time I tool the permit 25 questions like "if you are a first time offender of driving after dark how long is your permit revoked...30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 180 days" UGHH, got it the second time but had to pay the 30 bucks over

Then they rang me up for sales tax, I paid 500 for the bike, but its bluebook is 175 bucks  , I know i could part it out for way more than i bought it for but hey... They decided to charge me 109$ for sales tax ???

dont ya love when these cheep projects suddenly become more than cheep projects...

compression check checked out good, 155 on the left 150 on the right, In the manual they say 156 psi is ideal. havnt checked spark yet, but this weekend im gona try my very best to get it going.

Once it runs and drives im gona rip it down paint the fram lipstick red, get the tank and fenders straight, paint them flat black. Then ill get my buddie to do some red and white pin stripes and have a mean looking commuter

this all means less driving the truck, less money to fuel the truck...then more money for parts that burn fuel faster :D

I had to F*** with it..... 2006 honda cbr600rr swingarm, 94 gsxr 750 front fork....parts were cheep off ebay, but Ive been busting my ass to get it all back together.

it was running and driving for about a week before i decided to rip it apart, it handled like crap and barely stopped with the old drum brakes

pretty close to having it run again, new tires are the only missing link now

Getting money next week and getting this thing going. Need a battery, main tank to reserve tank fuel line ($48! YIKES), speedo cable, tune up, and a flasher module. Shaft driven, 750cc, paid $200 for it. 1983 Honda V45 Magna.
