Shorty Headers

Postby ramtough1993 » Wed Mar 21, 2012 4:27 pm

I have seen headers from flowtech and pacesetter to fit our trucks with the 318. Now on you tube i saw a guy try to install the flowtech headers on a 1990 2wd and they didn't fit, so i was wondering if any of you guys in the first gen world have successfully installed a set of headers, preferably shorties, on there truck or what some one would recommend.

Do you realize that this is a diesel truck site? We don't use headers, but we do change the rest of the exhaust to a larger size. Some of us have run gassers in the past, maybe they know.

Gassers are only good for donors for the real trucks. ;)

You must not have noticed you wandered into the Non-diesel section here, Pete. :P

The question is valid, but I dunno how many responses he's going to get on it.

I've installed (read as tried to  ) a set of headers on a SBF and it had EGR and all that crap. My buddy used Heddman headers, and they were long tubes. Fit was fine, at least on a Ford

I've had lots of dealings with headers on multiple types of vehicles. If you buy those type headers, then you'll hate your self later for it. You'll never get them to seal for more than a month at a time,I put money on it 8)

My rules for buying headers is as follows:
1:buy nothing but long tubes, short tubes are found to be little better than stock manifolds. Long tubes produce more torque.
2:buy nothing less than 1 5/8ths primary tubes and 3"collectors. More flow
3:nothing less than 3/8ths flangs. The thin ones warp up and WON'T seal after a few heat cycles

I usually buy Headman Elite headers or the hooker super comps.
I like the headmans the best because they use a ball flang collector instead of a gasket flang.

you can make them seal but you need to do some mods first, at least on a chevy.

before instaling them put them in a vice and get the biggest bastard file you can,
draw file the head surface untill very flat, then take a cutoff tool or hacksaw and
cut loose the front and rear tubes from the center two, use the waffle metal manifold
gaskets. you will not have any more problems on the head.

then on the colector, cut off the flare and remove the stupid dingly triangle the factory
uses, make 4 (2 matching sets) of 4 hole flanges 1/2 inch thick with a 3 inch hole in the middle,
weld one on the header and one on your exaust, if (and i never did) you need a gasket
at that joint you can use high temp gasket material and you will be done messin
with it.

i had a set last 16 years without a leak. 8)

I've never put a set on a Dodge pickup but they always been aggravating on Dodge cars. I know on a car its quite a bit of "you get what you pay for..."
