jeep wrangler getting 4mpg?

Postby bmack31 » Fri Apr 20, 2012 6:06 pm

im not exactly a gas motor type of guy but my jeep is getting 4mpg as of this week. its all stock 6 cylinder auto. usually i get 16. anybody have any ideas what could be causing this? it has fresh oil, air filter, tires are at good psi. the jeep has 76,xxx miles. if i changed spark plugs wires and fuel filters could that solve the problem? really looking for any leads. i drive inbetween 30-35 miles a day so its not economically friendly at the moment. i aprecate the time guys. cheers - from the new guy

Fuel line leak. Check for them. Was this a very sudden, overnight change?

Also, is the check engine light on? Could be a bad O2 sensor but that wouldn't make up for the horrible mileage.

My bet is a fuel leak. My old crown vic did something like that.

Get it scanned. Look for any MAP sensor codes, that's the magic part that measures manifold vaccum and tells the computer how much gas to mix. Another item that might be screwing with you is the coolant temp sender for the computer. If that thing read 10degrees while its 80 out side it'll richen the fuel mix to much for the air. Look for dark exhaust coming out the pipe.

X2 on the 02 sensor. I had an S10, I knew when the sensor went bad, mileage would drop from 18-19 down to 10 or 12. If I didn't change it, I bet it would keep dropping.
And do what Mr. Ellis says, he may not look too bright, but he has a lot of experience. ;)

Thanks a lot Mr Pete

One other thing to add, check the fuel pressure. If its way high then the regulator might be bad.

Man i'm glad someone posted this, my boy has a 99 and he is getting 10mpg or so, i know we should have scaned it
a couple weeks back but i ain't buyin the part and he is just know starting to get pay checks.

his also has some bad computer controled parts as it's hunting for idle (TPS) and the exaust looks mine does, all sooted up.
so i'm shure his 02 sensor is bad probly among other things.

thanks Ellis and Pete.

It also might be be a stuck-open thermostat. If the engine never warms up, the fuel mixture will stay rich. In any case (except a fuel leak) a rich fuel mixture will eventually cook your catalytic converter.
