Transfer Case

Postby meby » Fri Nov 23, 2012 6:38 pm

Will an NP205 out of a 78' Ramcharger fit my 84' w-250?

Also, what would cause a transfer case to work in 2hi, but not 4wd. Linkage, shafts, lockouts, everything else seems to work. When I shift, the lever doesn't have any resistance like its not hooked up.

A 78 Ramcharger would have a fulltime NP203. Are you sure you have a NP205 and not a 208 or 241?

I crawled under and looked, it is a 208. The linkage is fine.

I'm no expert, but I believe a 241c is from a chevy. Dodge version would be a 241d. Iirc it has a different spline count. At least that held true when I was looking for a 208 when I trashed one in my ramcharger.

If I were to stumble across a dodge version, would it work or are there varying spline counts, etc?

A 208D(odge) is only available in 23 spline.
Personally, I'd run the '88-'93 241D from a gasser, lighter and just as durable.

I checked with my local (good) parts guy and he said its probably a busted fork. He's trying to find one for me.

I'd take it apart first. Makes me wonder if there is a broken roll pin or backed off set screw. (Haven't been in one of these yet. Just a guess.)
