POS cavlier

Postby RCCUMMINS89 » Thu Dec 12, 2013 8:23 pm

So........I have a wheel bearing going out on our pos back up car. Turning to the left at cruising speeds the right front wheel does the infamous howl sound.

So, I jack up the car and it is tight as can be and doesn't make any weird noises when turning it. Simply seems normal.....so, I'm like ok.... I'll wait for it to get worse

Fast forward 6 months and like 15,000 miles.... noise is REALLY BAD NOW. Wheel bearing, seems tight as can be, etc...

WTF.... what else could it be?

i too would check the rear. if you are for sure the noise is coming from the front, replaced the wheel bearings. i had a 389 pete that the driver said he had a noise from the front end when turning left. jacked it up and checked, wheel bearings felt tight. it had the oil caps on the hubs that you could not see the oil level. wheel seals wasnt leaking either. i drove it down the road, and it sure had a noise. pulled the hubs off and the right wheel bearings where wasted.

Ya, I've checked all 4 every time I've checked.

Figured I should probably just replace it....I've just wondered in the back of my mind if anything else could cause it.

Never heard a cv joint make that kind of noise...... is it possible the output shaft of the trans can howl etc without leaking?

Doubt it Eric.
Jack up both front wheels and spin them with one hand on your coil spring for that tire. If the hub assembly is good,it'll feel smooth thru the spring....if it's rough, you have the winner.

Wheels bearings now a days are junk! They don't put any grease in them. I had to change a bad one for my buddy on his daughters car, the right rear. It was kinda funny, I jacked up the rear and spun the wheels, bad one 1st. It had a rumble to it. I spun the left one, and it stopped turning before the bad one did. When I put it on the outer race came out as the spindle went thru it, and there was maybe a teaspoon of grease in it. No wonder this crap only lasts a year before it's bad again!

Jacked up the car today... couldn't feel anything out of the ordinary past the feeling of the front brakes dragging.

Hell with it, I'll continue to ignore until failure happens. Or at least until it starts to fail. Eventually it has to get loose, right?

Do both front bearings at the same time. I have had two cars that i only did the bad one and found the other side to be getting just as bad a short time later, i just couldnt here it over the initial one.

Does it sound something like an dull airplane engine when going down the highway? Thats my best explanation for a BAD wheel bearing. I have replaced a few cv joints/shafts aswell but i dont touch them until they click pretty annoyingly when turning.

I replaced both on my wifes magnum because one was getting dry and noisy. There was no extra play or wobble. I was really surprised due to how loud it was. You couldnt have a conversation inside. It was kinda nice tho when I couldnt hear the kids fighting!

But ya..it's getting so it is noisy going straight and I can feel it in the floorboard and wheel a little. Stubborn little bugger is still as tight as a good one though.

I jacked up the front of the wifes car and ran it like that, 1 side, the other, then both. I ended up changing out both of them because I couldn't tell which one it was. I did the drivers side, and it still howled. I got it when I changed the other one. ;)

Helped a friend on his recently purchased 97 suburban. Had a front wheel bearing making noise. We pulled the ABS sensor, pumped it full of grease while slowly spinning the wheel. Took it for a test drive, wheel doesn't make any noise, and after a couple of trips, noise and stiffness is gone. May be worth a try

Great idea.... but I'm nearly positive this doesn't have front abs... only rear. Because, if I could find a way to get grease into the darn thing, it would be fine. It is as tight as new, but noisy = dry.

I see lots of them that make noise on the ground but nothing in the air. Also the noisy ones usually stay tight and the wheel bearings that usually get loose don't make any noise.
