Friggin Pontiac Montana

Postby matthewh » Thu May 28, 2015 11:12 pm

So my daily bomber/parts runner/ pos beater is an 04-05 Pontiac Montana, not 100% on the year. Has over 221k miles on it, orig engine and trans. Swap winter tires to my summer tires today, and on the way home from the shop, develops a terrible noise, kinda like something's way outta balance, from the drivers side front.
When it first started, it sounded like chirping brakes, on a warped rotor, and I could still do 60+mph. As the drive went on, turned into a grinding noise, like the wheel was rubbing, but its not. By this time, anything over 35 comes with a grinding, thumping, that gets really loud and harsh by 45-50.
By the time i get home, I'm down to driving 25 to keep it tolerable.
Symptoms,
If I steer to the left, the noise goes away, still hear a faint thump.
If I speed up, noise mostly goes away.
Steering to the right does nothing
Braking changes alittle, but not much
Get into the throttle hard, then snap outta it, the noise goes away, but when you snap out, it gets real loud for a sec, then back to previous level.

So I jacked the drivers side up, lower ball joint is firm, no extra movement. Wheel bearing same way, no weird noises when I slowly turn by hand, no notable play. Grab halfshaft, no movement in either joint, boots are good, no damage,
However, noticed I could physically move the whole axle assembly up and down 1/8" at the trans output, where is the pass side is tight, no movement.

It wasn't a sudden noise, it slowly came on, within 10-15 mile drive. Acts like the half shaft is worn and floppy, but isn't.
Is there some kind of support bearing inside the trans that went bad, if so, can it be easily replaced or does it require trans disassembled
Thoughts, advice? Gonna try and get it back to the shop tomorrow, if it'll make it.

If its similar to the fwd stuff i work on, the axle goes strainght into the differrntial and the only beari. there is the differential/carrier bearing.

Fwiw ive also had a dry wheel bearing that got super loud, but had no play in it when checking it on a jack

I did some googling this am, found there is a output bearing or bushing, pending which trans I have. I'm gonna try and limp it to my shop and see what's going one.

Found the jack given with the van, jacked up the front and found the wheel loose  Hmmm, lugnuts were loose, pulled the wheel and found the studs had stretched, one was actually broken, threads were gone, etc.
So, looks like its getting a wheel bearing. Not sure if they were just fatigued, or what, but it was a wobbling wheel making all the noise

A torque wrench is not a tool to be feared, it can be your friend! ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Thanks pete, I actually own 4 of them, and know how to use them, just got in a hurry and skipped that step

I lost a wheel once. Now i torque them everytime. And in my defence, the wheel was cracked and would vibrate loose. I didnt realize this until my rear tire passed me on a country road and the guy i got the wheels from happened to mention it.

No torque wrenching for me.....120/100# torque sticks and a good impact. Done.....no way to mess up.

Glad you found the problem, could have been way worse.

I never used to torque them, whack them down with the air wrench or breaker bar and it was good. Now I do it all the time, I figure it's easier than warping a rotor or having a wheel come off.

Torque sticks are the schit Pete! They're all set at a particular poundage because they are spring steel, and won't over tighten the lug. Time saver for certain. Only key is to have a good wrench.....no garbage

I've often wondered how those worked Ellis. Never looked into them though.
