1988 Toyota bad noises since rebuild

Postby fatty » Tue Sep 22, 2015 8:00 pm

In June of this year I replaced the crank on my 1988 Toyota 22r/5spd. A bearing went bad and started knocking, ended up with a scored #2 rod journal on the crank. I didn't really do a full rebuild, just need crank, bearings, gaskets etc.

Anyways ever since I got it back together it sounds like something is scraping or rubbing in the front of the engine. I replaced the water pump hoping that was it but no luck. I think the noise is getting worse now but I can't be sure.

Timing chain guide? Pull the valve cover and look down in there.

What exactly am I looking for? The timing chain assembly was the only thing I was kinda doubtful about as I had never dealt with a chain before.

I'll message you on Facebook in the morning with a pic of the two guides and tensioner. There's an L shaped guide that (sitting in the seat) on the left side of the engine and the other is a curved bar that pivots off a bolt in its lower end. That tensioner pushes against the top to take up the slack. The L shaped guide is really bad to break up and let the chain slap the cover.

Oh and one other thing, the oil pump bolts, are they in the correct places? You didn't use any odd sized bolts, longer? One could protrude enough to get into the chain.

It turned over fine by hand before I put it back in the pickup. I would be able to feel the bolt if it was hitting right?

If the chain was used or high milage it can stretch beyond what the tensioner can take out and rub on the front housing.
It will rub thru the housing into a coolant passage eventual creating chocolate milk with your oil.
