1999 GMC Jimmy

Postby jogl » Tue Jun 30, 2009 10:17 am

My daughter is buying her first vehicle. Although I was not able to talk her into a diesel I have at least talked her out of a little car.

We are going to look a '99 Jimmy 4 door 4x4 tomorrow. Do any of you guys have any experience with these?

Thanks,
JP.

Investigate the front end parts THOROUGHLY. I’ve dealt with several Jimmys/Blazers that turned out to be a nightmare with all the worn out front end stuff. Keep an eye out for worn ball joints (they are irreplaceable in the top or bottom a-links, I think), worn tie rod ends, torn CV boots, etc. Other than that, just keep an eye out for the usual: fluids, leaks, rattles and squeaks.

they eat ball joints like crazy. i thnk they like to go through wheel bearings too. i seem to sell quite a bit of both at the parts store.

It seems all the s10's and blazers eat front end parts. Once you start replacing them you never stop. I had a guy that worked for me that had a mid to late 90's S10. He had over 225,000 miles and he had front end work done every year for a sticker. They are a pretty tough set up other then the joints. My dad had one he used on his mail route and it held up lots better then the older 80's with the 2.8 grenade's. He bought 3 in a row an 85, 86 then a 87. He burned them up in a year. The 4.3's seem to hold up good. Lots of them had the valve seal puff of smoke when started. I would not have any reason to not buy one. They are pretty nice.

ask if the intake manifold gaskets have been updated to the new style. the dex-cool coolant eats the old style up.

good call on the intake gaskets. i think they "fixed" the ball joint issues in 00 or 01. by fixed, i mean they just tear them up slower.

If it's a cpi motor don't buy it, I will have a big alum upper plenum with a plastic insert in it that says Vortec, they were the worst things my engineers have ever came up with. That is the split year so you may have a vortec cpi or a vortec mpi, the mpi's are far better but still have their issues.
