Gasser Problem

Postby jogl » Sun May 27, 2007 10:41 am

I have an '89 F150 with a 5l EFI engine in it. It was not my choice and it will be sold as soon as I get it running right.

When I start it it runs fine for about 5 secs. then quits. It won't idle. If I give it some peddle it keeps running. It runs fine on the road but it won't idle.

I cleaned and dried the ignition wires but no difference.

Any ideas?

scrap it  I have a 90 EFI F150, the thing caught fire the first day I drove it because of a MAJOR oil leak out of the valve covers. Spent almost 1500 in parts to fix it and it aint right yet :x

Check for voltage at the alternator and battery. If not, go to wally world or a auto store and get a ODB II code reader for the fords. If I am right mine was the EGR sensor......I had another motor to swap parts from.

1 thing you need to know about the 302/5.0L. They really gunk up around the rear-most passenger side cylinder if they overheat. That is what happened to mine. It had almost a INCH of sludge around the push rods and oil returns. Not good for the motor

Pull the IAC and make sure the passage in the throttle body isn't carboned up. If it's clear, get a new IAC.

TPS? Could also be a vacuum leak. My 95 1500 dodge had a vacuum leak, stumbled real bad when you stepped on it. Something was leaking on the egr/evap cannister circuit. I just pulled it off and plugged the port.

the ford v8's have a problem with vacuum leaks, esp around where the plenum meets the lower intake manifold. put a vacuum guage on it and check for leaks.

Jeez, same thing with the dodges. That's what every body said was wrong with mine, plenum gasket. It wasn't leaking, but was close!

those things really take a beating when the engine backfires. it used to blow out carburator base gaskets but now plenum gaskets are the weak point.

screwed up idle or no idle but runs fine down the road is a classic vacuum leak sign. most other things that affect idle also affect upper rpm performance (weak coil, bad plugs and wires, improper timing, burnt valve, etc).
