If I was going to build one it depends on what your building it to do? Run stock tires and get ice cream? Or a bit larger tire with mild off road fun? Rock crawling? Mud pit?
If your going to throw bigger rubber and a mild lift on it I wouldn't invest .10 in the rear end that came from factory. Ford explores (not sure if all of them can't remember) came with a ford 8.8 inch 31 spline rearend. If you get one out of a I believe 95 or newer it should have disk brakes on it and they are like 3/4 of an inch narrower if I remember correctly and the spring mounts are like 1/2 inch narrower, its a much stronger axle then the dana 35. Or a great (what I would do upgrade wise) would be a ford 9" tons of aftermarket stuff out there because they've been used it just about every type of racing, plus they are super easy to work on. Gear changes can be done in 40 minutes or less if you have another set up.

Suspension wise it depends upon what you want to do. My personal opinion is not to do the cheap route and put longer shackles on like some guys do, puts a lot of stress on the frame. The YJ that we built in the picture up there had them on it when we got it and we had to unbend the frame where it started to twist.

Engine wise depends upon what you want to do again. I didn't see what year it was to know what 4 banger is in it. Obviously a 4bt would be a sweet set up. But you can also pick up one of the 4.0 inline six's cheap and get fuel injection on top of a nice motor.

Pretty much if you need help or info on them let me know I've been playing with them for over 10 years now and probably will die 10 years younger then I should have from all the rust and mud that I've ingested from them.

well it has a kid crusher cage so its 87-91. I think 91 was the only year for FI on the 2.5?

Its a 87 with a throttle body amc 2.5. It only has 79,000 miles on it so the driveline will remain. It will not be a heavy wheelin rig. Most likely 31x10.50's will be the biggest rubber it see's. It has 4.10 gears so those will be fine. Not even planning on lockers. I am not one to do hard 4 wheelin. Maybe a camp road or real good woods road. I'm not into fixing up stuff and then busting it through the woods. I basically want to tear it down and fix the rust. I have no funds for upgrades. I may get the later YJ roll cage if I find one cheap. They will bolt right in. I think it was 92 through 95 that had the better roll bar. Still have not had time to find an axle shaft. Had to pick up after a buddy had a gravel truck roll over onto a ford f 150. Not good.

the 95 and newer ford explorer came with the ford 8.8 limited slip 3.73 or a 4.10s with disc brakes. just cut the spring mounts off weld same ones or new 1/2" inside teh old ones. and get two left side rear brake lines. easy easy swap. did this to my 94 yj. after breaking the turd35 3 times. looks like a fun project man!

I would look into the 8.8 swap should be cheap as dirt and with some searching you should find the right gears already in it. The 35's are junk. My next tip would be to not put that diamond plate garbage that everyone else does to "protect" or hide rust on the body. Every jeep that I've ever seen that has put that crap on it always rots out faster and ends up looking even worse. To bad you don't live closer we have shelves full of parts off all the jeeps we parted out over the years. At one time we had 14 cj's sitting here 5 of which are either rebuilt or restored the rest weren't worth saving and are piled up in whats left of parts. We use to drive around and find them shoved off in the weeds and offer people little to nothing and drag them home. Its harder finding that stuff around here now after the scrap price went up a few years ago. The cash for clunkers took away many of the decent fixable YJ's and TJ's. I couldn't believe it when I was going around to the dealers looking for a vehicle for my old lady. The one dealership up towards Buffalo had 9 TJ's lined up that came in for cash for clunkers.

The diamond plate on the rear quarters are hiding the rust. It rusted away there and they just put the plate over the holes. I found a complete front axle and 4 spring packs ( stock ) for 200 bucks. The rear springs are in bad shape with rust between the leaves. I have never seen a leaf pack rust like these. The best price around here for axles is 75 bucks for 1 inner and outer. I would then have to replace the u joint. I figure having a complete front would be better. Spare parts are nice to have on hand. I have to drive 3 hours each way though.

I've seen people put half ton 4x4 axles under jeeps. I guess it works but it looks stupid. They have nearly all of the tire hangin out of the fender wells and the tires pepper them with whatever they run over. Rockcrawlers are cool lookin like that but on the street?

Finally worked on the HEEP some. The tub needs a new drivers side floorboard and some work on the rear quarters, but after I pulled all the carpets I was pretty happy with only one section rusty. I know it needs work under too, but it can be saved with some time, welder, metal. The frame has atleast 1 bad spot I can see so far. Once the tub is off I know I will find many more places. Its rough, but I have seen worse. :|
