93 drags home a new friend

Postby Richie O » Tue Aug 24, 2010 5:29 pm

Got the wife a toy. I figured after I have done a few projects for me I better get one for the wife. She loves the cj's and yj's so I got one to restore. It needs it. Don't let the pics fool ya its got issues. So I guess my upgrade budget for the next few years will go here.

The top is nice. The thing has just the 4 banger and a stick. Its a pretty bare bones, and rusty. Did I mention it was rusty. Everything up here is total junk after 10 years.

Not trying to take over your post, but figured I'd share my Jeeps and throw out some info. On the YJ's make sure you knock any scale off the frame especially around the spring mounts, they usually are cracked or paper thin. Also (not that I want to make everyone think I'm always trying to sell parts but I can get lift kits for them and some other parts as well) but if you do put aftermarket springs in it make sure they are a softer spring rate because the short wheel base and stiff springs suck to drive on or off the road. My buddy didn't listen to me on that and is now in the process of switching over to different springs 500 bucks later.
Here are some of my Jeeps and ones that I've built for people.
My CJ with our hand build body, only original pieces are the grill, hood, firewall/dash, and window frame. Don't have any pictures up loaded of it all cleaned up it doesn't stay that way long enough.

2 of our other CJ's the one that you can't really see is fully restored.

The original owner had the light sticks too. I bought new ones, but they are the same. I even put his brush guard back on. He will be super happy when he see's it. I am good friends with him as we worked together years ago. He has retired and lives about an hour from me so he has not seen it. He loves the truck as much as me. I told him he could not see it till it was done. I plan to visit this summer. The fenders, :D My JD620 would not fit on the trailer with the fenders so the torch came out. ;) We have had that trailer since the early 90's. Its hauled its share.

O, and as far as the Jeep. I pulled the axle out of the right front due to it being totally wrecked after the u joint broke. I am pretty sure it busted while being hauled by a motorhome as this thing is totally wasted. The jeep was set up for a towbar. I had a hell of a time getting the hub assembly out as I bet it has not ever been out. The hub ass. bolts ( all 3 ) were rusted on the head but I was able to wedge the next smaller socket on and back them off. I need 3 new bolts before it goes back together. So I called around and found an axle ( inner and outer ) for 60 bucks. I drove over 50 miles to find the part was wrong. My axle has the disconnect and the one they had was the newer non disconnect style. They tried to blame me for the mix up. Wrong, I set them straight and they admmitted it was marked wrong. So I am still looking for an axle and some bolts. I have plenty of time. :D

And redneckroot, I will take all the info you have. I have never played with XJ's before. I'm still looking for a inner and outer axle. I ended up working til after 6 so everywhere was closed. I think I found one for 70 bucks. I need the 3 wheel hub assembly bolts too. Mine have rusted heads and should be replaced.
