which side?

Postby txs » Sat Nov 06, 2010 11:04 am

wifes durango has a wheel bearing going out, took the calipers and rotors off, it needed pads so did that. i can't tell which side needs the bearing, both sides feel smooth and have no play when turning the hub by hand. I know it needs a wheel bearing, those unit bearings make a soft roaring whine, this one gets louder in right hand corner and quieter in left hand corner, anyone gots a suggestion as to which side is the culprit?

In my truck, I never knew which one it was. Replaced them both on both sides to be safe.

I get the vehicles I work on to the speed it does it the loudest and turn the steering wheel side to side. If turned to the left u load the right tire. If turned to the right u load the left tire. If u do that you'll find the side that's doin it by unloading it.

Probably the left side, since it roars turning right.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

My wifes Jeep is doing the same thing. Both sides are tight and it goes away when its unloaded and gets louder when loaded. I assume its a hub assembly. Now 140 bucks for each side I think I will try to find out the side thats bad. It needs axle joints real bad so I will have both sides apart anyway.

Well I took apart the " quiet " side of my wifes cherokee so I could just pound in a new axle joint and put right back together. No dice. I could feel the bearing catch as I turned it in my hand. So $310.00 bucks later I got 2 hub assemblies  Got 1 side back together and 1 more to do. ( next weekend ) In my case I could have bought some $80.00 hubs but I believe you get what you pay for so I got the pricey ones. I bet they were still made in china.

The one making noise on the wifes was the passengers side. When I turned left ( which added load to the passengers side ) it got louder and when turned the other way it was quieter. I am happy I did both. It really goes better now. It was really getting pretty loud, but both still were very tight when checked for inspection. I told him to check it very good because I knew there was some issue. I always thought they got sloppy when junk.
