jeep brake problems

Postby 1STGENFARMBOY » Sun Dec 26, 2010 12:09 pm

99 jeep cherokee brakes are not releasing all the way, put on new calipers, pads, pads
lasted 3 weeks, so still not releasing i guess, i'm not driving it so i don't know the symptoms,
all i know is the pads are gone in three weeks, you can put a c-clamp on it and push it in
pretty easy, .....the short rubber lines colapsing.....master cylinder.......proportioning
valve.....what do ya think.

Does it have four wheel ABS? If not then head for the master cylinder but only if on both side. If it was a line whoever drives it would notice a pull either with brakes applied or whenever they were to let off. Another thing would be crappy pads with the rears not adjusted( if drums). If it has rear calipers then the rubber line from frame to axle might be stopped up.

Not shure on the abs, it did wear both side evenly, does have rear drums but i just looked at the shoes
and they are getting thin but were adjusted, it has a small aluminum block under the master cylinder
that has a electric plug in it i'm assuming its the abs for frontonly, and i think just the front lines
go to it, it does not pull acording to the boy, i just put the old pads back on so i can watch it for
a bit just to see how it acting, ( didn't want to ware out another set till i found the problem,

i was confident it would be you ellis that answered first,

with what i have told you do you still think it is still the mastercylinder.? ? ?

Yes sir it very well could be the master. I've had them to do it on other vehicles.
On the abs thing, if you only see the rubber lines running to the calipers and no wires then its rear wheel abs.
Test your master this way. Go drive it and get the brakes hot. When you get back have someone pump the brake pedel several times and let off. After they've done this crack the line going to the master that's for the front brakes. If there is pressure on the line then it is bad. There should be none by the time they're foot leaves the pedel.

In 97 at least, abs was not standard on the cherokee. My wife's does not have abs. I have put 1 set of pads on since we have had it and the rear is how we go it. We got it at 90,000 and its mid 135,000 or so now. It has never had what I consider great brakes. One way to check would be jack it up and mash the brakes. If when it releases you can spin the front wheel right off then they are not sticking. If you got a real cheap organic pad they can wear quick.

My wifes 96 grand cherokee had 4 wheel ABS. I agree with Ellis on the master, sounds like the culprit.

I will shure try that test, i will go back out and look at the abs set up a little better, today we been puttin his christmas stuff on it,
you know the stuff that makes it run better, 3 in lift, bigger tires, paintin stuff that will have mud on it in less than 24 hrs,
but what do ya do he's my son and we do dumb things for our kids

Thank you very much guys, if this thing keeps giving me problems i was considering
seting it on fire, we got a ("GOOD DEAL") on it at an auction, i was there and looked at it
and seemed fine, even ran and drove fine for 300 miles, I think it had sat for a couple
years, so far...new short block, head, water pump, u-joints, front wheel bearings,
2 yes i said 2 sets of engine gaskets, ... so buy now i could have bought a nice one,
but i have so much in this #@%^*&(#@!$%*!#%$@$# i can't stop
now.

thanks guys for your help...Darwin
