Chevy gasser tranny woes

Postby Richie O » Mon Jan 03, 2011 6:08 pm

So today was a small snow day and only our commercial accounts needed service. I had the 08 dmax and dad had the 07 6.0 gasser ton truck plowing a big parking lot. He calls me and says the tranny is roasted. Nice. Under 10,000 miles on it. SO I get done with my route and get home to take off the plow and take it to the dealer. I put it in reverse,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, nothing, forward,,, pause,,, would move but slip. Reverse,,,,wait for it,, would move but slip real easy. Anyway get the plow off and head for the dealer. Held it in a low gear and kept the revs up so it would hold. I get up there and shut it off. The service guy comes out and drives around the yard. He says " nothing wrong " I'm like lets go down the road. We go down the road,, mint, no issues. Reverse,,, mint. I was so pissed. I could just hear now. " Can't duplicate customer complaint " which is the cop out of all time. So come to find out the last couple of times plowing the battery volts got real low. ( running the plow for an hour in same lot with 1 battery in the truck ). Dad said all the idiot lights would blink. ( my dad is the type that would drive a truck even if its on fire as long as it moves). When I shut the truck off up there it must have reset the computer and fixed the issue. The truck had run all morning without being shut down. They tested the battery and it would not load test. Gave us a new battery under warranty and we will be installing a second batt. Just a funny ( electronic ) tranny story.

We ended up having to have a custom alternator built for our plow trucks. They would do the same thing and even with a dual battery setup it gave issues. Had custom alternator built and droped back to 1 battery with no issue.

This is the first year that issue has come up. I am in hopes in our case the dual battery will help. I know for the past 3 years the truck has not given any trouble as long as the battery was good. I thought it sounded like it was cranking real slow. My dirty max should be fine. 2 batteries and dual alternators. I think that truck would light up a small town.
Dad said thats right when the tranny had a fit is when the lights came on and even the plow stopped working at the same time. He said the volt was down around 10. Shutting down the truck was one thing we didn't try because we knew the battery was low. O well, live and learn.

I have seen him do some funny things over the years. More then once he finished the mail route in low range because the tranny was BBQ'ed. Flat tires to him mean you should not drive more then a 100 mph or 50 miles. I got a call once. " Get the hose out, the trucks on fire and I'm coming home " He did make it home, and it was burning. He even finished the mail one day with a 2.8 S10 with the crank busted. Sounded like a box of rocks. Busted it on a rod journal and the rod held the 2 halves together.

What was ever wrong with a fully hydro unit. Seems manufactures couldn't leave anything without a wire running to it. :? In case your wondering what was goin on. The electric pressure regular inside the trans was not controlling the pumps output. Low pressure low grip for everything.

Thats what it felt like. Real low pressure. Thanks for the info. So I assume it reset when I turned it off??

Yes sir. We had a 93 6.5 1ton with the 4L80E in it and you'd be running down the road and it would just fall out of gear. Just like you knocked it in neutral. Come to find out there was something going crazy inside its alt and you short. Would pull the juice from the computer just enough to screw with the trans. Weird deal and we had to drive it awhile like that before we found the problem. It would never act right till the key was cycled.

OK, got the truck back and all is good. Still has 1 battery and will stay that way till warranty is over with. The dealer said it would cost over 800 bucks for the " kit " to add the second battery. They said I could not just add a battery to the truck. " It needs to have the correct harness which hooks into the truck/computer." Give me a break!! They said if I added a battery and just tied it into the other one ( like everyone does with no problems ) it would not work. WHY WOULD IT NOT WORK?? It would and I know it. I figured I would quit while I was ahead.

Wait till you have battery issues with your D-max. They do all kinds of fun things with low voltage.

He is not there yet. He can run any equipment better then I ever will. He makes me sick when he digs a cellar hole and its within an inch everywhere when I check it with a laser. I am sure he could comb my hair with the teeth of the bucket. Now, his ( late ) dad when he still drove.
