Redline vac/hyd brake control setup

Postby bmoeller » Sun May 06, 2012 12:06 pm

Have a Redline vac/hyd setup in my '93 that is of no use to me. Can't say it all works, but there are good parts from it that could be used, if anyone stills uses the stuff. Can see it somewhat in the vid I made yesterday. Can get more pics if needed.

Still needs to be removed from truck.

I'll take it off your hands. The vac over hydraulic seems to be popular around here, and I'll probably buy a used gooseneck in a year or so.

That'll work.

Ya coming to Michael's? Can bring it along with me. Save the shipping. I'll let you know when I get it off. Or, if for some reason I don't get that far, we can take it off at Michael's too. Shouldn't be too bad.

I hoard those things.

In my opinion, vacuum-over-hydraulics are the ONLY safe trailer brakes for anything that doesn't have genuine air-brakes.

The controllers are very simple, with hardly anything that can ever go bad; usually nothing is ever needed to resurrect an old long-un-used one other than a good cleaning/oiling.

Once in a while, the diaphragm/boot inside the big trailer-mounted booster unit will rupture; so far, I have always been able to obtain new ones.

The only reason vacuum-over-hydraulics have gotten less popular is it requires quite a bit of initial installation under the hood and plumbing routed to the line-plug ports near the hitch-ball, plus about $1200 worth of parts; whereas, the much inferior electric-hydraulics require no more modification to the truck that a plain old electric brake-control.

The electric-hydraulics are light-years ahead of magnetic electric brakes; but, they are not even in the race when compared to genuine vacuum-over-hydraulics.

I love to feel that big heavy-loaded trailer squat the springs and pull the truck backwards with the least bit of braking application.

My loaded vacuum-hydraulic equipped trucks/trailers will stop quicker/better than the naked trucks.

That's what I've always ever heard about them. Probably been at least 5yrs since I've seen one trailer equipped with it. None of them at work have them. All electric, and none of them work. :bh

For the lazy general public, it is simpler for them, and far easier to maintain, and you don't have to bleed them.

I wish they would make them with air brakes myself, like the big trucks. Not just for the med/hd trucks. Effective, and relatively cheap to work on, vs hydraulic. Hate working on juice brakes with a passion.
