Newbie in Georgia

Postby bubba » Sun Nov 04, 2012 7:25 pm

Hey guys. I've got a 1992 W350 reg cab flat bed. Obviously a ve pumped I/C with an A518 auto. Locking diff in the rear. Don't know about the front. I bought it with a busted lock in hub and ordered a new set but the snap ring wouldn't work with the new hubs so back to square one. I also have a bad fuel leak out of the (vent?).

Maybe. I'm not sure how hard that is but I'm sure I could handle it. Here is a picture of it.

It shoots out of this fitting when throttle is applied.

Welcome! That leak is usually caused by a bad o-ring on the guide pin, which is the pin that rides on the fuel pin.

I need a breakdown to figure out if the fact that it doesn't have a fuel pin would cause the leak. I'm not sure what all has been done to it but it will spin all four rear tires for a truck length on the highway.

See image below . . .

- One idea is that lacking a Control Cone (fuel-pin), the hydraulic pressure in the case, can push the Guide Pin fully into the barrel that the Fuel-Pin rides in such that the Guide Pin is past it's associated sealing ring.
- Another idea is that, like above, lacking a Control Cone, the Guide pin can be hydraulically pushed past the area it has rode in for the last gazillion miles. With that, that area being "clean" from use now has to ride over gum/deposits on the Guide Pin thus damaging an otherwise OLD sealing ring.

NOTE: The above also applies to a leak developing shortly after installing an aftermarket fuel-pin that's cut deep.

Really helpful bc847. So there is a sealing ring on the guide pin? How hard is it to replace?
