new to cummins, in st. louis MO

Hey guys, name's Jim

Just bought my first diesel last week(1990 cummins ram).

I got a call from my mother, who told me that the lady up the street was selling it. She used it for the occasional pulling of a horse trailer and has 92k original miles. Never been messed with, turned up or anything like that. Only thing I don't like about it is that it's 2wd.

Anyway, plans are to start with a good set of gauges(feel free to recommend a good setup), then I'll turn it up a bit, probably add an intercooler setup, then exhaust, followed by larger turbo, then injectors for when I turn it up a little more.

I'm completely new to this, so I'll take my time, I'm still learning a lot of the acronyms... and have a lot of reading to do.

Anyone in the st. louis area? Any shops anyone would recommend? I'm not even sure if I should keep taking this truck to my old mechanic.

Thanks

Welcome aboard! Nice barn find, I wish mine looked like that! In my opinion, if you consider yourself even vaugely mechanically inclined, you can make these trucks run two times better than stock. These old Cummins engines are argueably the simplest engines ever put in a pick-up truck.

Agreed, I think the only thing keeping me back as far as working on it is just being nervous about messing something up(simple or not). I've never had a diesel and I'm not going to kid myself into thinking working on it will be just like my f150. Just want to do things right the first time. Thanks for the welcome.
