New to 1stgen. 93 auto to nv4500 swap

Postby Stoner93 » Tue Mar 26, 2013 9:32 am

I've got a 93 w250 extended cab with the piece of crap auto. had a buddy rebuild it for me and less then 500 miles it lost 3rd 4th and reverse so I'm going with the nv4500 swap. I just put a rebuilt one in my father in laws 91 and kept the core to rebuild. I just ordered the parts for the rebuild, had to get a new input shaft and cluster shaft. Still need bell housing and master/slave, shift tower, 23 to 29 spline coupler, clutch pressure plate flywheel, and to fab a cross member tranny support. I have a peddel assembly. Tranny is out of a 98 and newer dodge so it has the square shift tower with the updated main shaft/fifth gear nut. All together the swap will cost right around $2100. Can't buy a "good" rebuild auto for that not one that will hold up...
The truck has a small lift with 35" tires. I put pods in it cause I was at runaway with my stock auto injectors and the pods were free... turned pump back down to compensate for auto rebuild but that obviously didn't matter. Will turn it back up for the NV4500 wanting to put better injectors and a 3" intercooler already have the three inch intake to install. Stock from 01 cummins hope it works... Also free...
I'm trying to get the 36" or 37" heavy duty military tires and a flatbed and lower the truck back down. I will need to cut the front fender well to clear the tires. Would like to be able to haul a gooseneck still. tires are just to expensive to spend close to 2grand every two to three years and I go to the mountains a lot so the 37" tires will help. Probly suck the fuel milage down a little more then the 35s too.
If you guys have any advice about any of this let me know. I have thought about going the other way with it and converting it to a duelly for all the towing I do but we'll see need some money for all that plus that's six tires. Feel free to blow up my board and tell me what I am doing wrong. I appreciate any feedback

Sounds like you got a plan!

But one thing...those 37" Goodyear Wrangler MT oz Mil Spec tires aren't exactly heavy duty. On top of that, they are made of a fairly soft compound, they won't last too terribly long (loaded at 12k, they last 5-8k mi. max.) Also, they are 16.5"s, and alternative tires in that rim size are fewer and far between. Unless you can get a screaming deal on them, in my honest opinion, I would skip them ;)

Humm hadn't heard that I figured on those hammers loaded down with gear they would have to be pretty tough... I wonder if they have different ratings like D or C? Would be nice if they had some E or heavier... Rims aren't a problem for me I've got a set of 17s right now if the military tires are like you say. I can stay with those.

Those Goodyears come in several different types, MT's are D's and there are MT/R's in D and E load ratings. Then there are the BFG Baja's that are used, and those are D's...

Long story short, even though they have the weight ratings, the rubber on all of them is very soft compared to a civilian tire...

Another thing, if you do decide to run them, and you get some of the two piece beadlock/runflat wheels that they are mounted to, you will need a 2"or more spacer, as those things are wicked offset...

It's been my experience the 16.5" rim/bead interface sucks (spins the rim inside the tire bead with a decent power level).

Very nice ride! Looks really rot free!!!

Yes, 16.5's suck, but there is one thing that is an advantage here. If the stock Humvee wheels are used ,i.e., Hutchinson D.O.T. legal beadlocks, the tires don't slip on the wheel because of one unique factor...the tire is actually sandwitched between the internal beadlock/runflat device and the two half's of the wheel. One thing is for certain though, you get a nail or a leak on one, getting that rubber beadlock/runflat out is a HUGE pain in the arse. It has to be compressed and then bent up like a banana, and forced out of the tire. Now, if you could get a set from Hutchinson that are beadlock only (no runflat part), those are pretty easy to change out...compared to the other style ;)

Yeah there isn't any rust on it I bought it from the original owner three years ago with no mods at all only had and extra 30 gal fuel tank where the spare tire goes. Normal sun damage on the top and clear is gone very clean interior.
