Hello, from Kentucky

Postby BenjamynMock » Tue Jun 18, 2013 11:41 pm

Hello everyone, My name is Ben. I am 21. I am the very proud owner of a 1992 Dodge D250 automatic waiting to be converted!I live in Kentucky but am originally from Georgia. My parents bought this truck in Atlanta for $2000.I drove it back home without overdrive which i know now is a common problem. So instead of buying a tps we used a volume switch out of a Hammond Organ. Shifts likr a charm.! :) The truck has 371k miles and it doesn'teven take a quarter of a revolution for her to star! My parents gave me the truck when I moved up here because I had an unfortunate meeting with a fence post on icy grass in a hair pin turn at 4 a.m. in my 1982 Mercedes Benz 300SD turbodiesel W126 converted to a 4 speed manual(documented). =( sad day, she was fixable but I am sad to admit the subframe had been cracked once before by the previous owner.. So to the crusher she went.. Anyways back to the Cummins, she is my daily driver. However the transmission is going out in a bad BAD way... I am going to attempt a rebuild due to the fact i can afford a rebuild kit and not a rebuilt trans. I found a site where I can get a master rebuild kit for $125. Too good to be true? I the site is http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com does anybody know of or have pur hased from them? It would be awesome if you would ley me know! I am realising how valuable these trucks are and am very happy that I found such an awesome forum!!!! I look forward to all thegood stuff I can learn!!! :)

Welcome!
That rebuild Kit is about right.....but,there's always a but , you'll also need a shift kitand converter. Trans Go has one that works like a champ called the TFOD/diesel. For converters you'll need to look at specright, sun coast, georend (sp), or a place called performance torque converters that will custom build your converter with whatever you want, however you want. Very good people to deal with.
You'll also need a manual, atsg makesthe best manual imho.

Well, three bottles of Lucas trans fix later. I can do 35 just fine shifting manually and staying out of OD. But when idling in neutral the torque converter sounds like war and cavitation. She won't last long and I absolutely hate driving it like this but I don't really have a choice.. The thought of flushing everything just seems pointless and a waste. Still looking into rebuild kits. Confidence is not as strong as before to ta ckle a rebuild. I have never done one except for school.. Looking for used ones. Had some luck this morning through craigslist with a fellow 1st genner who had done a nv4500 swap but scrapped the a518.. =/

When you get this mess sorted out, I'm very casually looking for a dirt cheap 518 core. Chris may still have my number if you want to unload it.
