Just saying Hello

Postby WyoUltra » Tue Jun 25, 2013 8:22 pm

Just saying hi, I joined this site because I'm hoping to start a 80s Quad Cab swap hopefully within the next few months. A few goals for the truck are to make as much power as possible, while still keeping the cold start advance on my fuel pump. Wish me luck!

Is there anyway I can "subscribe" to this thread so I get instant email alerts, I looked around, but couldn't find it. I'm sure it has it, many other forums do anyways haha.

How much can I bore out the stock pump before I lose the Cold Start?? I am a noob at this so forgive me, but to my understanding you can bore the pump out to a max of 14mm. And from what I've heard you can only bore it out a few more mm from stock. Stock is 9 correct? I heard that anything over 12mm causes it to be gone. At what point does the pump reach it maximum flow rate to where the turbo(s) have lack of fuel?

I guess I should tell you why I want to keep the cold start. The reason I want to keep it is because I'm from Wyoming, and my main passion is snowmobiling. I know.. But that doesn't mean I can't like diesels still right??? I like building things, I like projects, and I love the way the first gens look. Anyhow, back to the cold start, on occasion it will reach anywhere from 20-30*F below, sometimes more, in the mountains here. Occasionally I like to make an overnight trip to my cousins cabin, where we have to snowmobile in. This leaves me, unable to plug the truck in, and here I have my dilemma. I know a lot of people, in general, think diesels are notorious for not starting in the cold. But I'm also aware of the fact that if your truck is clean and well maintained, it shouldn't be a problem.

I have two roommates who are diesel mechanics (brother & a friend) so we should have the mechanical side of this build covered. But does anybody know what I can expect as far as numbers on the truck? It will tow anywhere from 5000 to 8000 lbs, hopefully every weekend ;). I plan on using an NV4500 as my transmission, we also plan on doing water meth to help keep things cooler. I'll probably just run winter blend windshield washer fluid in it, nothing extreme.

This build will probably be build on a pay period like time scale haha, so it won't happen over night. Any tips or advice? Good places to look/things to search on the forum?

The stock pump is a 12mm head and rotor. There are also custom 14mm aftermarket head and rotors out there. EDM would be the process to enlarge them, no drill press enhancements here. To my understanding, there is no reason to disable the cold start (referred to as the KSB) in the pursuit of horsepower. The KSB in fact advances timing, therefore giving the fuel longer to burn and thus starting easier as I understand it.

Do you have a horsepower goal in mind? There are a couple trucks well over 400hp with an essentially stock, yet "turned up", pump.

With '89 to early '91 trucks, there is literally 100 hp of free fuel on the table. 300hp is not hard to surpass with a good turbo. The '91.5-'93 trucks have smaller injectors (thus less free power) and are more refined.

But most importantly, what is your power goal?

Haha, well I would like to have anywhere from 5-600 hp, but the more the better. My only concerns are how reliable it will be once it gets up higher, as well as how to keep my EGT's down when towing, when pushing that much power. My brother mentioned doing compounds with a large intercooler, and a "after-cooler," he said it would help keep it down.

Edit: Two years ago I was towing my sleds and there was ~50-60 mph wind with 75 mph gusts, how bad will that amount of force affect my EGT's?

Have you ever been in a properly set up 300-400rwhp truck? It feels like hell on wheels.

Anything over about 350rwhp starts becoming hard to set up properly and creates a lot of heat while towing. Up to 425rwhp or so can be had and tow amazing..............but you've got to know what you're doing.

Now all that aside................an hx35, a fuel pin, a gov spring, intake, and exhaust.....along with proper pump tuning and your truck will have the power to pull anything it can up any grade.

My brothers 98' 12 valve haha, It's awesome. I understand, it's awesome, and it probably would do whatever I wanted. But it's one of those want/need things.
