FNG from Texas

Great to be part of a solid community, coming from a 7.3 PSD which overall was an OK truck. I have a better understanding of the fully mechanical injection systems since I've been tinkering on VW diesels for over ten years. I'll get busy reading just wanted to say Hola.

Looking to buy one, figured it would be a good idea to learn about this generation before buying one. I've seen a couple lower mileage ones locally (100-150k) and have kept tabs on pricing. Overall the 1st generations will provide me all the truck I need without the downsides of the others I've come across thus far.

I was on the fence between the 2nd generations and 1st but several details pushed me back towards these.

I owned a D100 1976 model for a while, old army truck, had grand dreams of putting a Cummins in it but it was a regular cab and I need the extra cab space for gear. The slant 6 was an interesting motor, at least had time to see how these trucks are put together.

I'll do my best to help the community just like I've done on the VW side. Its nice to see the VE style pump finally put to some good use ;)

Welcome-

We have lots of old tired 7.3 and 7.3 powerstrokes around my part of NC, and hearing all their woes is one reason I waited a few years to find the right cummins.

I have a neighbor down the street just restored a old diesel vw rabbit. Fixed the body and completely rebuilt the engine. He put a variable vane turbo setup on it as well, added oil squirters and the works. From what he says it will actually go past 55mph now ;) 'at least twice as fast'.

Had a pic of it but the phone died- will try to upload one soon. He rigged up a cool 2-stage vacuum actuator setup to run the vanes. No boost it was fully closed, then it opens up to stage 2 at around 8psi, then opens the vanes fully at 15psi or so. Was thinking of using one if the turbo on the dodge every goes out. Just looks like 4 or 5 hard vacuum lines and vac switches so I guess it really isn't as interesting as it works or sounds.

Just be patient and wait for the right 1st gen~ my only regret on mine is the lack of manual transmission but everything else was a good start.

Edit: how I was able to find it and my recent vw bug was a craigslist app on my phone that emails you when new trucks/cars with certain keywords are posted. I am always first in their driveway now that I can keep up with that.

Q,
Glad to hear I'm not the only one keeping these old rabbits running. Although I admire your friends abilities to use the variable vane turbo on a rabbit, the best part of these old rabbits are their simplicity. Don't get me wrong my 77 rabbit diesel has parts from a 97 Passat TDI and a 2001 jetta TDI, nothing major just parts that improve upon the original design. The term the vw guys use is OEM+, I just call it adapting and overcoming. :) I appreciate the warm welcome, threads on this forum are definitely much more mature the most vw forums. Still on the lookout for my 1st gen but as recommended I'll betaking my time finding the right one. Hope everyone has a good weekend.
