Hi from Everett

Postby 12V93 » Fri Jul 26, 2013 6:06 am

Just picked up another 12V 8) 1st gen this time.
It has a few issues but a decent low mile truck.
This is my 2nd attempt at signing up for this board, not sure what happened the 1st time.
I was unable to get in touch with anyone to figure it out (must have hit a wrong button).
Anyway looking forward to the site, I was told by one of the guys from the NWBommers this is the site to be on when it comes to 1st gen 12V’s.

So it looks like I should have added more info on my truck..........
93 1ton (dually) 2x extra cab (not sure what dodge called it  ) auto.
It has the normal paint issues that the previous owner put primer on.
Interior is in good shape for the most part (a couple dash issues).
The truck has 148,xxx miles plus/minus.
It has an issue I am trying to work through right now.
When I got it, it stumbled (idle drops) at idle, low rpms (while not under load is the worst) and after letting off throttle. The previous owner went through the fuel system up to the pump (new lines, tank, exc). I did some posting on another board and valve lash came up along with the idle, injectors, and a few other items to check. I was looking at injectors and was told to check the valves first and pump timing. I need to get a manual, the one I have is for a 2nd gen and they made changes between the years. So yesterday I got a chance to check/set the valves. They were a little loose (not to bad) so I reset them and it made a slight difference (not much). Then I decided to pull the line that was in the way of setting the idle. I adjusted it to were it actually was touching were it needed to. This made quite a bit of difference at idle, now the truck idles lower and a high idle kicks in (keep the truck form stumbling) then goes back to idle. BUT if you rev the truck up it acts like the stumble is now a lack of fuel at higher RPMS. Not 100% sure as it was getting late and I did not take the truck out of the shop.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
At this point I am thinking about taking the truck to someone that can check the injection pump (test it).
Unless I should be checking something else first?

Thanks

Btw, weird thing happened on mine. Just stalled out one day and couldn't get it to fire back up. Checked the pick up, lines, lift pump, filter, injector lines and was getting fuel to the injectors. Put in a spare set I had and it started right up. Sent the others off to get cleaned and tested and come to find out, they had a bunch of buildup in them all.

I have been getting mixed input on the injectors, so I am looking at the other possibles first..... I talked to a couple places about ordering a set and they recomended timing and checking the pump first. I have had diesels for a while but this is new to me so I am unsure of the best route to take to get the problem fixed. Just know I would like to get it fixed. So we can do some camping while the weather is good. :D

Mine still starts up like a chanmp every time, starts the warm up process and then (before I made the last changes) it would start to stumble (like it was missing). Now it seems to be up the RPM range know. :?:

I scanned through it quickly..........did you change your fuel filter?

Have you double checked for a GOOD connection to the fss.

We replaced fuel tank, lines, filter, pump (lift pump, by the starter).

"GOOD connection to the fss" ?
Sorry not sure what you are refering to, all my diesel exp has been just normal maintance stuff. I need to get a shop manual for a first gen also. The one I have is left over from the 2nd gen we sold a few years back.
