New owner of an old truck...

Postby longwhiteandugly » Wed Sep 04, 2013 9:04 pm

Newbie to the forum, howdy, I'm Mike in Mesa Az...

Stumbled on this really cool 1992 1st gen D350 with a custom sleeper cab conversion, 205K original miles with a ton of new stuff and good service records.

has a like new (less than 5K sun coast converters transmission, a new turbo, lots of service recently done)

Anybody know anything about the conversion?

It has a few electrical issues so I'm waiting on a manual to show up with some prints so I can troubleshoot a bit...This truck runs like a clock, and drives real good. has a little body rust, but not too bad, overall really sound.

any helpful hints on parts resources, experts on these old rigs, etc would be a boon..I just discovered the site, so I'm sure there is a lot here, I'm just getting familiar.

Welcome. I believe someone had linked an add to that truck in the craigslist thread a while back.

Thanks all,

I'll send more pics as soon as I sort out my brake lights and clearance lights...I ordered a manual for the diagrams, can't find anything legible online for free that will get me there. The stuff I downloaded is too fuzzy for me to make out colors and such.

It is a nice runner though. I would have opted for a stick if I had a choice, but at least it has a suncoast built up 46RH increased clutch count, rigid bands, steel planet carriers, pump modifications, Sun Coast valve body and double deep pan with 5K miles on it. also brand new brakes all around, a brand new injection pump, a brand new turbo, and pretty much all new under hood rubber...

A lot of expensive stuff I dont need to sweat..I just have to get my head around the old clapped out 70's body and wiring...reminds me of cars I had in high school!

i've got a few days "til my manual arrives to look for obvious culprits, any pointers would be welcomed of course...right now
I'm dealing with a chassis infested with black widows, so I'm having to be really cautious under this truck until the fog does its job...

Also got a line on a nice western hauler bed I'll probably put on there if the dimensions work out right.

If all goes well I'll get it sorted, get the bed on, the front bumper built, and treat it to new paint...then drive the wheels off it..

This is my first Diesel

My dad had a 1993 D250 years ago that made a good impression on me, Never figured I would stumble on one like this though..

this configuration suits our needs well, very roomy cab, decent mileage (in theory anyway, I havent checked it yet), and can easily tow my trailer.

I'm the third owner of my 1990 W350. I'd been looking for a 1st gen for about a year or so before I stumbled upon my rig on craigslist. Never thought I'd find such an unadultered truck. The Old Man is just about bone stock. I'm new to diesels too. I haven't wanted to tinker with a vehicle since my various VW's.
