Made the plunge

Postby Cornell3786 » Mon Sep 08, 2014 8:59 pm

A first gen cummins has been making me drool since I first got hooked on diesels

Found one with 300k ish on the body 200k ish on motor and isn't rotten as a crotch (I live in northern michigan, salt sucks)

2 grand seemed like a no brainer to me!

How long do these last and what are their quirks?

I bought it to plow with but if I could trust it to drive 6-12 hours on trips to work( oilfield worker) I would love to do it.

It's 4x4, it's an auto, not sure of gears.

I read a different 95% lockup tq converter is a step I should take.

Can't wait to pick this pig up tomorrow!

I'm sure you'll be hearing from me often

Welcome. Where in Northern Michigan are you?
I wouldn't hesitate to drive mine to California if needed, it'd just take awhile. IMHO, if I had to rely on my truck to drive that far consistently, id keep some spare parts onboard, they do have there quirks.

The wiring is the biggest pain on these truck. They never came with a lock up converter. As for plowing a large aftermarket trans cooler, upgraded converter, shift kit and fresh rebuild if needed will upu fine.

I live in the Huron national forest outside grayling roscommon and luzerne

I was just in boyne yesterday!

Thanks for the replies guys I am picking the rattler up tonight.

I have a 2014 powerstroke that I drive for work now but I racked up 7400 miles in 4 weeks

I'll have to pull her in the garage and give her some love before I make any long trips with her

Nice, we trail ride that area, mainly Grayling, but have been known to expand our area. You said you work oil field, any chance your working that pipe job there putting in next to the BP gad station, across from the bowling ally? Just curious what they were adding there.

Dont ride sleds much, crazy I know with all the snow and area, but I've got a '73 Ski-doo T'NT 440 I used to ride, just needs work, and good, quality parts are getting hard to find.

Mainly trail ride that area in trucks, specifically old military ones. Kind of an end of the year thing, bunch of us get together and take our trucks out on the trails. But graylings close enough for day trips or short weekend ones
