Hello, my name is Jack I am new here and have a lot to learn

Postby classiccarjack » Sun Feb 08, 2015 1:02 pm

Hello everyone,

My wife and I have two Gen 1trucks, a early non intercooled D250, and a D350 intercooled dually. I have a lot to learn about these wonderful trucks and hope that I can build these up with the help from your knowledgeable members. I love these trucks and hope to keep them going for years to come.

Thank you,
Jack H.

Thanks guys, after working my dually really really hard for the past 5 years, it's time to make her pretty again and do some modifications. My first goal is to start with the transmission and the fuel delivery system. I need to learn more about VE injection system, lift pump, and good injector choices. My best MPG was at 21.35 MPG, and now I am lucky to get 11 MPG. I have a feeling something is either worn out, or I have a leak. My transmission is the A518, and the overdrive began slipping this week. I would love to find an adapter to install the 47RH I purchased, but then I will need a good two wheel drive overdrive unit. I bought a 4WD unit, but have come to terms with the fact that a gear vendor set up is out of my budget. Please help me with some advice. I am new to Diesel trucks, and have a lot to learn.

I'm 85% sure your A518 trans tail shaft will swap on to the 47RH.

Welcome.

The tail shaft housings will swap back and forth. A sturdy automatic will make it feel like a new truck.

I agree, I do know that the A518's that I have built for the gasoline magnum engines in my past were the best in the 1995 model year. Unfortunately for me, I have no idea if this applys to the transmissions used behind the Cummins. Can I use a gasoline OD? Or will it bolt on and not have the right output shaft size.... I must admit, this is a new realm for me. I know that you guys are going to know what will and will not work. My truck is a 1992, and I luckily got over 300K on the original transmission. Please feel free to give any suggestions. I hope that I can use the 1992 case and build it with some beefy aftermarket parts. I am really interested what you think, and which parts I can use that will last and handle towing our heavy horse trailer.

Thank you, and I agree. My dream is to someday convert over to a NV5600. But that will be when the kids get older and move out... LOL. It's going to be an automatic this round.

In order for me to run my 47RH, I need a different adapter for the back of my engine to clear for the lock up converter. Can anyone help me with the casting #? Or steer me to a thread here that discusses this sort of thing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need the second gen adapter from 94-2002. It doesn't matter if its off an auto or manual and you will need the starter. As for the 2wd overdrive housing you may be able to use the one off your 518. I'll do so.e digging later.

Here is the thread I did on my 47RH conversion in my '89 2wd: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11319

The condensed version is this: As you know, you'll need the adapter plate and starter. The driveshaft may need to be shortened due to the thicker adapter plate. You also have to control the converter lock up somehow. It's just a solenoid, so I used a toggle switch.

That thread is kind of a jumble because I wrote it as I was going along. If you have questions, just ask.
