New here, with my 1st gen Cummins powered '78 Bronco

Postby Copperman » Thu Aug 27, 2015 4:11 pm

Hi, this looks like a cool forum, so I joined up.
In 2009, I built a 1978 Bronco with 1991 Cummins 6BT power, C6 auto that I had specially built by Dynamic Racing Transmissions with 1200 rpm converter, and the truck is lifted 9" with everything having been replaced/rebuilt on the '78 chassis. The truck only weighs 5200 lbs, so it's very light for a diesel, and thus, it's pretty fast. lol I get 17 city/23 highway mpg with it, and it's been my DD for 35k miles, I love driving it. Of course I want more power, though.

Matching flexplate, also from Destroked. SFI approved for competition. (It's VERY strong)

Just bought some sheet metal for it, I am going to weld in new quarters and door skins hopefully before winter

NICE!

I do wonder what your axle ratios are. The C6 doesn't have OD does it? I don't think Ford had an overdrive trans until the AOD...

My axle ratio is 3.50, with the 35"(after tomorrow, 37") the ratio is the equivalent of a car with regular tires and 3.00 gears. I am eyeing the 6L80E transmission for a possible swap at some point. I am liking it's specs so far.

As for the 1/2 ton axles, they do hold up pretty well in a light truck, even with Cummins power. I put a trac-loc posi up front, so the axles have it easier, and rebuilt everything. So far so good. The rear of course is a 9" axle, and those are pretty durable. Even the stock 31 spline axles have held up since 2009! Lots of hole shots with the truck, too. lol

Still no intercooler on it. 3200 gov spring, pump turned up as high as possible, denny T fuel pin, pump timing advanced some. Everything else is bone stock. I want to upgrade the turbo and add an intercooler next! I want zero smoke at full throttle.

Nope it's a 3spd. A VERY tough 3spd. That cummins would destroy an AOD.

Thanks for the compliments! I consider my bronco to be a blood brother to the dodge cummins pickups. Not only is the engine from the 1 ton dodge, but several other dodge parts I needed for the engine swap literally bolted right into my truck. I'm using the dodge alternator, p/s pump, throttle pedal and cable assembly, brake prop valve, part of the instrument cluster lighting, and some other pieces I can't think of right now. lol
