Hi there

Postby justin.loehlein » Thu Feb 25, 2016 8:30 pm

Hi there. Just joined the forum and read the rules - figured I'd introduce myself. I've got a '93 W350 5 speed. ~215k on it, all stock except for a 4" exhaust. I got the truck about 18 months ago from NY. The previous owner had refreshed it mechanically, but the body is a bit rough - I can stuff my hands through the floorboards. The plan is to restore it, starting later this year after I clear out a few other projects, and use it to haul my cars to track days. I grew up around a couple 1st gens and have always wanted one. I'm excited to start the build, restore the truck, and give it enough power to pull a ~12k lb enclosed trailer comfortably.

Welcome!

I replaced the body on my 91 a couple years ago, not a super hard task, just getting original, rust free parts can be a challenge anymore, even some of the southern states got rust now a days. Lots of great people and knowledge on this site.

Thanks, guys. Power-wise, I'd love to hear from anyone else towing a bunch of weight, but I'm thinking 250-300hp should be more than enough. Not sure at what point the Getrag will become unhappy - I don't plan on beating on the truck, but a 12k lb trailer won't be doing me any favors.

I found a clean D150 shell for a parts truck that I plan on pulling apart and using the body from. I have a lot of mechanical experience, but I've only started messing with body work. I just finished repairing and painting my wife's Miata after hitting a small deer at ~60mph. I'm currently building a Factory Five Cobra replica with/for my Dad - I need to get that finished up before starting on the Dodge, but that should be this year.

When we got the car a bit over a year ago

State of the car last Fall after moving into my new shop. I paused at this point to fix the Miata.

I'll have to get some pics of the Dodge and post them up this weekend.

Man, that's a pretty nice shop!

Btw, if your Getrag is in good shape, fill it with five quarts of fresh lube and run it. Getrags are actually pretty tough transmissions, most folks are just misinformed and think they're not worth rebuilding.

And avoid WOT/high boost under about 16/1700 in 5th........I think thats part of why mine is giving me the finger.

I'd probably run on the thicker side for lube as you'll be working it hard

Thanks for the info on the Getrag, guys. I've currently got it filled to the top PTO cover bolt with Amsoil syncromesh. I've only got a small open trailer right now, it doesn't really have any issue pulling that. Max weight that it sees right now is ~6k lbs.

Here it is pulling one of my friend's cars to a track day.

Image

The camper shell came with the truck. The original owner bought it when the truck was new. It's an early ARE shell, possibly made for a Ford (judging on the shape of the rear door). I use the truck as my hotel room at the track.

Image

The previous owner refreshed the truck mechanically and cleaned up the frame several years ago.

Image

But here's a shot of the driver's side floorboard. Passenger side is the same story.

Image

Thankfully, I found this D150 club cab shell with super clean floors and rockers! It's only got the typical surface rust on the roof and hood, plus a few dents.

I feel such jealousy over the cobra
Too much to even worry over the dodge issues....well almost. Run the rpms up higher than normal when pulling. Matter of fact....if there's still a factory gov spring in the pump......I'd run it up till it almost defuels in 1,2,3 and till I knew there wouldn't be much struggle going to fourth, same with 5th. I haul heavy schit all the time.....and I've had to rebuild mine twice. Once for the 3rd synchro, second time the pocket bearing in the input let everything sag, causing crappy shifts. At no time have I busted or twisted anything shifting like I do.
