Hello everyone!

Hello everyone!

I've been a cummins guy all my life (except for one Ford 6.0 but we won't talk about that :puker: ) I have an 89 W350 project that I'm working on. It has a lot that I want to do with it. I've been reading a lot and trying to learn as much as I can. This is my first truck project but I've redone a lot of tractors in the past so I'm not a newbie at turning wrenches. Basically I'm just trying to find the best way to do things. I'm kind of particular so I like things done right. At the moment I'm working on the chassis. It has a lot of rust. Mostly surface but I may have a few spots that may need addition repair. I won't know until I actually tear into it. I'm going to take the bed off and start sanding and wire brushing then coat it with rust inhibitor, paint, and undercoating. If anyone has any tips or things to look out for please let me know.
Thanks!
Woody

Welcome to the forum. If you’re planning to take the bed off anyway, I would recommend looking into the fuel system, make any needed repairs to the fuel lines, pick-up and sending canister/draw straw in the tank. Also the bolt that fastens the drivers side rear leaf spring shackle mount should be easily accessible incase its rusted and needs to be replaced. Good luck with your project!

Hi There! If you have rust, while the box is off check the short angle piece of the crossmember that holds the rear fuel tank strap. Mine rusted thru and the strap fell out letting tank dangle.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Dangle like a dingle???

Ya, mine let go on the 92 once and I lost about 3/4 of a tank of diesel. Filler hose popped off and tank was about an inch off the ground. I thought it was water comming out of my bed,,,, nope, steady swath of fuel down the road.

Thanks everyone! Those are some good tips. It's actually a flatbed so it will be easier to remove. I have been looking at upgrading the fuel system. I have been thinking maybe a Bean Sump and an original Air Dog lift pump. If anyone has anything ideas that would work better let me know.

Before taking the plunge on an air dog, look into a lift pump from THD.

X2 ^^^ Eric at the Hungry Diesel has treated me right several times. He has a high volume low pressure mechanical lift pump that will supply enough fuel for 400hp or better, and it's not electric!
