Alternative fuel section

It doesn't seem there are a staggering amount of guys here that run waste oils, but all three of my local first gen friends do. Any chance?

Seems I keep running into you Spencer. I like to run "black diesel" when I find it. Most of the shops out here have waste oil heaters so there is a market I have to compete with. I used to get 1000s of gallons of used oil from the oil rigs I worked on. Better MPGs. I had to pay attention to the weather. Once I got stranded when I drove to North Dakota and It was 50 degrees colder than when I left home. Fuel got too thick.

It would be great to hear about your filtering/thinning Dmerlin.

What difference in mpg, power and EGT did you notice?

I don't have an EGT gauge yet. I regularly got at least 2 mpg better and sometimes about 5mpg when it was hot out. I run it from a drum thru a 15 micron filter then a 2? micron filter. It pumps slow but it works. I would still burn thru a fuel filter every 4-5000 miles but I thought the free fuel justified it. I would normally run 60/40 oil and diesel or 70/30 oil and kerosene(when available) anytime I was regularly above 65 degrees. That's about 8 weeks a year where I live. I had a road trip to Vegas in July and ran 100% oil with no problems. I brought 2 drums with me. Not the cleanest way to travel with oil drums and a transfer pump in the back. I even have a fancy sock filter that separates water from the oil. The fuel filter separator would still catch some water anyway. Did I mention the truck runs quieter on oil. Much more quiet on 100% oil on a hot day. It wasn't all perfect. My friend has a 06 cummins and out of jealousy he wanted to try it. After about 5000 miles of 50 / 50 he had to replace his injectors. I've not had any problems with my 12v and he is still a little sore about it.

Wow what kind of sock filter is it? Is your 2 micron filter absolute or nominal rated? Great to hear on the mpgs, what kind of lift pump do you have?

Our fuel systems are a lot more forgiving, but I guess anything that can exceed 30,000 psi has got to have some tight tolerances :)

This is the link to exactly what I have. It wraps around a whole house water filter. I have to change out filters every drum but it's cheap and the oil is/was free. A centrifuge would probably be much better but I've never used one. I imagine it is gonna be messy no matter how it is done.

Thats pretty sweet. How bad is the smoke/haze? Does the kero blend burn cleaner? I do have a pressure driven centrifuge from PA, but haven't set it up........

The smoke is only slightly more. The Kerosene works best because its thinner and has a lower gelling temp than #2 and #1 ( #1 is Kerosene and #2 mixed I think). You can use more oil with Kerosene than #2 diesel because it lowers the viscosity more. Viscosity is your enemy with oil fuel. A high viscosity is great for the IP but too much will gum it up. The temp has an enormous impact on viscosity. I've only ever used the stock lift pump.

I agree, one of my friends ran straight wmo and it didnt like starting under 80 degrees. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Only reasons I went with a piston pump were to give more inlet pressure to the IP for increasing fuel later, and running waste oil.

I didn't run a fuel pressure gauge but I know i needed one. The IP would sound different as the temps drop and the oil gets thick. We used to test viscosity of drilling fluids on the drilling rigs with a small funnel. Fill to a consistent level and time how fast it drains when you remove your finger from the bottom. That would be one way to test vis and try to keep a minimum standard as weather and mixing changes. Clean 15w30 at about 90 degrees would make a good base line maximum. The reason for that is I know my truck can run 100% oil at 90 degrees very happily.

I had to think about that one. I had 10 drums that I continually rotated between home and the rigs. On average about 3 drums a month for 5 years, considering I drive more in the summer and use much less oil in the winter. I figure in the neighborhood of 10,000 gallons. Except for my oil changes I haven't used much oil lately since fuel prices are so low but I will when it goes back up. I would bring home diesel from the rigs in a 110 gal slip tank and use that to mix with in the barrels. Can't see red dye in oil! Even in the winter I would use 10% oil just because the cummins loves it and red doesn't show through. I know she misses it now. I literally did not pay for fuel for 5 years. I went to Illinois once and bought a tank of that biodiesel mix that they force on them, I could immediately tell a difference in power and economy and noise. Went from 22ish mpg down to about 16mpg. I only bought that tank because I knew I didn't pack enough with me and I was dressed up and didn"t want to get dirty moving the pump from one barrel to another. It is a messy and lucrative endeavor.

Awesome! Over 100k miles on motor oil or thereabouts? Original IP still healthy?

Cummins still running strong, no problems. Everything else on the truck seems to be a never ending problem. If the fuel is a little thick for the IP it will let you know. Its such a loud part of the motor that it tells you what it likes and what it doesn't. My pump makes a slight ratcheting sound (like a baseball card on bike spokes) when it is way too thick when the cold night caught me. You'll hear how much it likes oil and how much it doesn't like ULSD.

Rather than set up the CF, I really would like to filter your way. I've got bag filters from 200 to .5 micron (been gathering for a while), I just can't get it through my head that there's got to be some holes in the bags that are waaaay bigger than .5 micron. And how would anyone know......
