Coil spring ??

Postby Arnold Layne » Tue Aug 13, 2013 8:35 pm

Can I change out the coil springs without using a spring compressor, unhooking the lower ball joint and letting the spring down with a floor jack? '90 350

I did mine with a floor jack. I can't remember if I unhooked the top or bottom joint though. I do remember I had to put the spring in, then turn it in to get it in the seat because it was tight. The lower seat where the spring sits has a notch because the spring doesn't have a flat end, the coil isn't tapered, it just stops. I think I had to use a ratchet strap or something like that to draw the control arms together to get the balljoint back in the hole too.
It was a few years ago, but I'm pretty sure that is correct.
Be careful Arnie! ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Thanks Pete, I will be careful, I may get pissed and buy a spring compressor to help with the last inch or two.

Good luck with that! Most of those are so cheap that they may not work. Have you actually looked close at how thick those springs are?
