Rear Disc Caliper Clocking.

Postby Raymo » Tue Nov 10, 2009 1:10 pm

The Housing on my 80 will make for a tight fit between my rear caliper and the wide perched leaf springs. My question is, aside from having to bleed the caliper off-axle with a socket or piece of tube acting as the rotor, are their any braking performance drawbacks to running the caliper down 90 degrees from where it's at? From the factory its positioned the same as the front, with the same sized calipers and rotors as the front axle. Due to the size I'll be running an adjustable proportioning valve to the rear, so with that should I be set?

I've run something similar to this in the past with NO proportioning, but that was on a chevy with only 12" rotors all the way around with MUCH smaller bored calipers.

:shaking: Can you tell this conversion is burnin me out? Lmao.

when i was converting my ramcharger to rear disc, i was trying to figure out if the calipers were supposed to be clocked toward the front or the rear. i called the company, and they said it didnt matter as long as the bleeder wa up. if you can bleed it off axle i dont know why it would make a big difference from a performance standpoint. if it were me, i'd gravity bleed it instead of the tube idea. sounds like a hassle imo.

Only problem I had with the gravity bleeding, is if I have them clocked down then my bleeder would be pointing so far down there would be hardly and fluid in the bore.I was just out measuring tho, and it's going to have to be mounted downward because there will be about 1.5" of interference thanks to my wide frame.

I converted my D70 to discs with a kit. I was concerned with all the caliper stuff hanging on the bottom of the axle, so I put it up top.

That has the bleed port facing down. Other than having to remove the caliper to bleed, it's been no problem what so ever. :)
