Dually conversion stuff.

Postby ford69557ci » Wed Dec 16, 2009 11:29 am

I am converting my x cab w250 to a dually. I have already figured out what I need to do to convert the front d 60 over and it's easy. The rear is another story. I dont want to just buy the spacer kit and do it that way. I want to do it factory style with the 5/8 studs and everything. Are the d70 axle widths the same between dually and swr? Can I just find a set of dually drums, hubs, and brake back plates and bolt them on? What do I need for this conversion? Also does anyone know of a place that the fiberglass rear fenders can be bought aftermarket. I have set a new mega cab one on there and it looks bad ass but they are way to expensive.

From what I have been told the two axles are different. Also, a dually cab & chassis axle is similar to a single wheel axle. You need to find a pickup dually axle and throw it under there. Or what I have heard alot of guys do is just put a D80 under there. I think they are alot easier to come by. I could be wrong on all of this though so if I am.... Sombody please correct me so I know as well. This is something I have thought about doing in the future.

yes, you need a pickup dually axle. it will look stupid if you use a too-narrow axle, as well as possible fitment issues. as for fenders, you might be better off calling up arrowcraft. they make the drw conversion stuff, including bolt on fenders. the factory fenders have a HUGE cutout behind them, and i think it would be difficult to make it look 'right'. when i converted my d250 like 5 years ago, i called and they were like $450 for the set with hardware.

I have a set of the spacers and would be willing to part with them. They are the arrowcraft brand. Shoot me an email if you are interested. rich1jt@aol.com

No spacers, this one needs to be done right. Well I guess this works out ok since my truck currently has a srw d80. If I can't use the 70 I have in the barn I will just buy a drw 80. Does anyone know how much wider or narrower a drw 80 is than a drw 70?

From what I understand, since you have a '94 up Dana 80 in your 1stgen, it's possible you can already put dually wheels on it.

A buddy of mine has a D-70 from a '96 V-10 truck in his '92, and it's WAY wide for the truck.
You'd need to swap to the smaller brakes, because the dually wheels hit the single-wheel drum before they seat to the drum.
Or you could run 17 or 19.5 wheel.

We looked at a second gen and a first gen in a parking lot. The second looks wider so I guess I am just gonna have to find a drw d70 from a first gen locally and that might be impossible.

I'm saying you MIGHT be able to put DUALLY WHEELS on a 2nd gen SINGLE WHEEL rear in a 1st gen BODY.
The 2nd gen single rear is extremely wide for a 1st gen with a single wheel.
It may work, if you use 2nd gen dually wheels with the smaller lug holes, but you may also need to use the brakes from a gas DANA 60 3/4 ton, or run the bigger wheels.
The diesel single wheel 70s and 80s use huge brakes compared to the dual wheel 80s and they (reportedly) won't clear with 16 inch DUALLY wheels.

My 80 is wider than the 70 it puts the rear wheels right inline with the front wheels. Why couldnt these dummines just keep this stuff all the same widths lol.
