brake booster/master cyl

Postby skilletky » Tue Nov 29, 2011 11:47 pm

if you were going to replaced your booster/master cyl, what brand would you buy? i have replaced mine 3 times with the cheap a$$ autozone special, want to get a good one that will work good and last! i think the units i got from autozone were cardon. need to get them working good before we get any snow that amounts to anything.

honesly, i dont think any of them are great, ive had advance and napa fail repeatadly. for the master cylinder, im going to find someone who will sleave the cylinder in stainless, I used to know a guy who would do a great job on them but last time we talked to him he was having some hard times (something about strippers, cancer and his wife divorcing him....no joke)

anyways, thats my next step, we would get them back from him with a stainless sleave and have never had a comeback from any customers, My camaro has one, Porshe had one and a few others I have owned.

Rockauto has a booster that says USA seals in it. Question: how are you determining that your master and booster are shot?

answer:

usually for me, its a master that will give a squishy pedal even after lots of bleading, and, like Pete has said, now my master is pushing fluid past the seal into my front resivoir, it dosnt affect the pedal feel, but it leaks like a mother

Sounds like the remanufacturer didn't clean up the bore. Let me see if I can find a link to the USA parts I was mentioning.

I always take them apart now, and the bores are fresh, i think its more of a surface finish thing or just crappy seals

I can't seem to be able to post links to rockauto but I will give out some part numbers that I had been looking at:

Master Cylinder:

Looks like there are some brand new parts available. I *BELIEVE* the below master cylinders are new (hard to tell on some).
Bendix 11775 $43.79
Cardone 131775 $43.79
Coni-Seal MC98896 $21.89
Dorman M39712 $42.79
Raybestos MC39712 $53.79
Wagner MC98896 $56.79

Analysis: the Wagner seems to focus on the bore and is probably the one I would select. Unfortunately, none of them specifically mention being made in the USA so that makes it difficult to gauge quality.

Booster:

Prior 3700282 $81.79 + $38.00 core = $119.79.

Analysis: The Prior booster specifically mentions using US made rubber seals and diaphragms. I believe these are remanufactured units but they also mention testing 100% of the parts. I feel as if this is the route to take on boosters.

I hope the above helps. I have minimal knowledge of whether one part is better than the next I just know that USA made doesn't let me down. I have Cardone rebuilds on my truck and they have been fine but I am going with the Prior booster if my Cardone let up (lets hope they dont).

I hate to keep raining on your parade, but ive had the new ones fail consistantly as well. I dono why...maybe its just my luck... but I have sent probably 3 new ones back (2 napa, 1 advance wagner)... and eventually got ones that worked. they just act squishy, and push fluid out of the back of the bore

It seems not to matter much anymore feller. I buy USA made parts every day and have them fail too :x
Only reason to buy USA maid is to support a USA located business. Ever think it might just be "assembled" in the USA. Sad sad thing :(

Only other thing I can think of that would cause new parts to fail would be having the pedal rod pushing at a weird angle and stressing the piston/cylinder seal. I doubt your firewall is bent so I have done all the helping I can think of! Best wishes.

Well I installed a Wagner master Cyl, had to adjust the booster rod out, the bakes work better than they ever have, still got to bleed them more. Broke a bleeder off in the fl caliper so I replaced it, but atleast I got a nice firm pedal and it stops very well now.

When I get to the point where I am sprucing up the engine bay because I have finally got to the point where I need no more power to have fun, I am putting this in and rear disc brakes.
