Power steering Fluid Foaming???

Postby Farmboy » Wed Jan 11, 2012 10:44 am

As it is getting colder here my power steering system takes a while to warm up... if I try to turn when I back the truck out of the garage to warm up it sometimes acts like there is no power steering.. give it a few seconds and it catches up...

However that is not what I am concerned about.. (old truck = patience needed )

what I am concerned about is after it does this... if I try to force it too much... the power steering fluid gets very foamy and pushes itself out of the cap and drips to the ground.. what would be causing the fluid to foam???

Air.

We went through this on our service truck already. I've heard of the return lines getting rusty and having pinhole leaks in them, but ours turned out to be the screws that hold the reservoir onto the pump rattled out. The reservoir was stuck on there with age, so no fluid leaked as it sat, but it sucked air where those bolts fell out when it was running.

It has done it ever since I built the truck back up after the accident... but it only does it when it is really cold outside... could it be that I didn't get the system blead well when I hooked everything back up?

I have the same issue since i did my crossover steering (had steering box off). Mine also leaks out the back of the P. steering pump somewhere.
