I need help ASAP

Postby oldestof11 » Sat Jan 28, 2012 2:17 pm

I am in the process of changing the POS Dodge slip joint for a U-joint. The (#&%@& roll pin had me cut through the top of the joint to be able to drive it out. A few times over 12 hours I hit it with PB Blaster. Drove to my parents place as they have more tools. Hit it with heat and pb blaster and the %^#* pin wouldn't come out. I have spent 5 hours trying to get it out before cutting a slit right above it and driving a screwdriver into the to spread out enough from me to drive it out. Still gave me trouble but it is out now. Note, I was driving on the side with a slightly smaller hole hitting it towards the larger one. Now the :yuck: :/  joint wont slide off the splines. Pull the dust boot for the joint and it was beat to heel from one of the PO of my truck.

Am I screwed or do I just need to work the POS off with something other than a prybar??? ANY help is appreciated. I am thinking of just leaving it till it is 40* tomorrow...

Lots of pry bar and hammer. Generally the input seal on the steering box will leak (more) after this job.

Yes it will, as long as the fork isn't too wide.

I brought the heat up to a warmish feeling on my bare hand with a small propane torch as it was 30* out. What would happened if heated too much? I had the truck running and I turned the shaft to try and get a nice even warm up.

Heating it too much may take out the seal.
If you could touch it, you probably didn't hurt it with the heat.

Ball joint separator did the trick. 10 minutes later it was off. Now I know why it was loose. The spring was missing and the 1 piece of metal wore into the shaft about 1/8"!!!

Working nice now! Best $50 yet.
