Rear brakes - need help can't get the axle out

Postby Ironforger » Fri Mar 18, 2011 4:01 pm

1990 W250 Dana 70.

Trying to take it apart so I can do the rear brakes and upgrade to the 1ton shoes and wheel cyls.

Took off the axle nuts, (Axle has studs not bolts) and I can't work the axle free. Wont budge at all. It's so damn tight I can't even get a screwdriver in there to pry it out.

WTF? Any suggestions? Is there anything else holding it to the hub besides gasket cement or rtv? I don't want to beat on this thing too much & risk damage.

Thanks!

Chaulk the wheels and put it in neutral let the preasure off the rear. I've had the axle stick before and this helped. You can also smack the nose of the axle to help jar them loose.

If you have studs, you also have lock cones. You need to swing a hammer at the center of the axle (dont hit the studs!) to pop them loose. This is the way you're supposed to do it . Beat it hard.

Ok great, this is the info I was looking for. I do see the lock cones around the studs.

Good thing I'm a blacksmith - steady hammer aim lol well not that confident. I'll put the nuts on loose to protect the threads in-case I miss.

I figured you already had those out. If you hit the stud they will bend usually. Don't be afraid to hit the chit out of it to pop them.

I'm good for hitting the studs at least once. I usually leave the nuts on them flush with the ends incase.

That did the trick!

I hit them a few times hard with my blacksmithing ball-peen and they popped right off. Didn't miss once! Of course you know i would have surely missed if I didn't put the nuts on the studs :D

Much appreciate the 1st gen forums.
