Drive shaft Q

Postby cougar » Sun Sep 06, 2009 11:27 am

OK, holiday weekend with no bosses around and nothing to un-break. I got my 92 in the barn and crawled underneath to "inspect" the undercarriage.

The rear drive shaft U-joints are shot.
The rear yoke is spread.
And the center support is well, a hoop would do a better job.

How securely should the center support hold the drive shaft?

Seems odd to me were they put the support. You would think at the end of the short shaft by the u-joint would be the best place, but they put it near the middle. That would give the long shaft some leverage to swing out of place.
RIP 91.5 W250 5 speed. The great experiment.

I've had some with some up and down slop. The rubber gets worn and gives more than designed. I'd recommend finding a driveline shop and having them go over it front to back.

About your carrier bearing (sorry, that's what I've always heard it called), mine have been on the front shaft, just forward of the slip splines.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

None of the parts shops ever heard of it (kids). If you told them carrier, they went straight to the axle books. So I took it to a drive line shop and one of the mechanics walking through rattled a part number off the top of his head and that was the one. They put on the bearing and I put on a set of u-joints.
