Rear hub nuts

Postby TRENDZ » Fri Jan 01, 2010 11:35 pm

Have any of you guys had problems with rear hub nuts wearing away at the bearing mating surface? My 90 d250 had a groove worn into it on one side of the truck. Now, I was inspecting the rear brakes on my 91 d350, and both hub nuts are worn pretty badly. The truck has 250+ miles. The adjustment of the bearings seemed fine before disassembly. The plastic that is embedded in the nut shows several lock installation locations, so the previous owner must have "adjusted" the wear out of the nuts a few times.
Anyway, are the nuts/locks still available? I'm assuming that the outer bearing was spinning on the axle to cause this. Any comments?

Can these be converted to the better style? Like a chevy has with a nut that locks on a ring with holes? I hate these nylock things.

Yes you can. My cab and chasis had them that way when I got it, and I switched the ones on my 93 out as well. I hate those drive in tabs. I got the 3 piece nut kits from the local spicer shop.

the other style ive seen on a dodge is where it uses a flange between two nuts, and you bend tabs down to lock the nuts. i think its a pita myself.

There is supposed to be a spacer between the bearing and the nut- looks like a thick washer.

I like the 3-piece style nuts on the front of the 4x4s. I'll look into converting the rears when I have to do rear brakes.
