I got the 19.5 blues

Postby lucky91 » Tue Aug 16, 2011 9:30 pm

I purchased $4000 worth of chinese chrome on ebay. 245/70R19.5 Hankook DH01's on Vision Duallie Haulers.
The rims were intended to mate with 1/2" or 9/16" wheel bolts, not my 5/8" wheel bolts. Whilst seeking justice
through Paypals, "Buyer Protection", their resolution center dignitaries came to the conclusion that I was entitled
to a refund, though only after incurring a $600 shipping cost that I would not be compensated for.

To give some foresight into my dilemma, during a heated debate between myself and the seller, they had deliberately and
whole heartedly referred to 5/21's of an inch.

Now here I sit, looking to make the best of a truely whAt? up situation.

I'm not interested in changing my wheel bolt diameter, but I am engaging in reoccurring fantasies that include voiding the
manufactures warranty. Another 1/16" and there good to go. Has anyone ever drilled a rim with any luck?

I'm not planning on givin it the ole wallerin out with makita hammerdrill either. With a little research, I found I could get
whats called a step-down drillbit made that would start a few inches with a pilot to carry the bit plumb and true, then half way up, widen to 11/16" to handle business, but again any input would be greatly appreciated.

I know that there are company's out there that do what you are after. They'll drill it out and install a hardened seat for an acorn lug. This might be a better idea than drilling them.
Only other thing that I can think of doing would be to find a machine shop to do it.
There is another choice, adapters. Would Not be my first choice but it is there.
Sure sounds like a turd deal that you have. Hope you can work through it.

Thanks for the response.

I am currently calling around to local shops. We'll see what they're charging.

What style of lug nut do they require, barrel (mag) or tapered seat?
What diameter and depth is the current hole?

Well, I got them on. I had to drill the 4 chrome rims from 5/8" to 41/64". The steels came 41/64" and fit snug.
The wheels did not jive with my riderite airbags in the rear, so I had to remove them. I was able to adjust the support out of the way, but the airbag itself needed to move about an inch inward to fit. I also had to grind down the
alignment pin on the hub. Even with the airbags gone, the ride is smoother. This is my welding rig and the total weight
is 10,800lbs. Without the weight Im sure the ride would be rougher. I'll post pics later.

That means your welding rig and extra weight in the bed is about 4,000lbs.

The bed itself weighs about 4000lbs. The welder 1600lbs, and another 1000lbs in tools, give or take.

The tires have definitely made for a more stable ride. Before, even while I had the airbags on, going over a couple of big bumps you could feel
the bed sway side to side, now it is a lot more firm.

Now, having removed the airbags, I can see the sag in the rearend. I'd like to incorporate them, but without modifying the supports, it looks like the only way
would be to add spacers, probably 2" if they make them. The problem is that the outer wheels are already flush with body. Any suggestions?

You're already nearly at the rear axle's rated capacity, if the weight figures you're quoting are true.

IMO, if you haven't already, you should increase the main spring pack count by adding under the first 3 leaves.
To help soften the choppy ride, go with a heavy duty rear shackle-eliminating air ride, such as the dual bag Kelderman, or similar.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Next on my list is shocks and leaf springs. I'm pretty sure the shocks still the originals, and from what I've read bilstein's are ideal.
As far as leaf springs go, Deaver or Alcan? I've read good things about both, so I'm still not sure which way to go, but I'm gonna look into that kelderman.

To tell the truth, I wouldn't know the quality on either spring manufacturer you mentioned.
Most times I just have mine re-arched and add at least 2 NEW leaves to the main stack when they sag out.

If you add leaves, add to the top of the stack and use the same length leaf below each one you're adding to.

Doing so, I can about GUARANTEE it'll ride like a freaking lumber wagon, but a Kelderman, or similar, will help take the harshness out.

Keep in mind that the air ride is just that, an air RIDE.
They will NOT add capacity since they typically replace, in some form, a front or rear spring support.

I know it's not one of our trucks but I have bilstiens on my Tahoe and they suck! It has horible body roll with these and is all over the road no matter how small a bump you hit. That's been my experience with them. I feel they are way to soft.
