9/16 stud conversion?

Postby 93DodgeCummins » Wed Dec 07, 2011 8:09 am

Is there any good write ups of anyone doing any 9/16 stud conversions on our first gens?

I converted my 92 to 9/16" studs, was really easy once I found enough studs and nuts. Easy as in pulling the rotors and drums off and pounding out the old studs and pressing new ones in. They can be driven in with a BFH, but since I have a press, I did it that way. I used some Dorman studs and nuts from various parts stores to get a total of 32, all I did was take in a 1/2" stud and we matched the end of the stud that sits in the hub up with something that would work using a dial caliper. In hindsight, I should have taken the time to find longer 9/16" studs as the ones I have now are a little too short in my taste to mount aluminum wheels on, but they work just fine for steelies. I believe I used studs that are for a Chevy K30. Hope this helps ;)

Did u have to drill out where the original studs were to the larger size?

No, apparently the studs he found had the same press-in diameter as his 1/2" studs.

the shank is 5/8 i believe, so both 9/16 and 1/2 step down

The diameter of the stud has little effect as to which wheels are put on, as long as there is ample length and the face of the lug nut fully captures and centers the wheel. As for running aluminums, make sure that there is plenty of length, I know the stock 1/2" studs can be too short for some aluminum wheels as older wheels have a thicker center. Newer ones aren't as thick. The 9/16" studs are a good upgrade, mainly piece of mind IMO. If you go with the 9/16" studs, try to find the longest ones you can, so that there won't be an issue running the newer wheels...and you will more than likely need spacers to run them, otherwise, the wheels are stuffed clear in and it looks goofy as all get out

Yeah, I think you can just use the later model lugnuts for those wheels, can't you?

I wouldn't be suprised if they are the same, check to be sure first, as I bought new studs and lug nuts when I converted my 92, I had a set of 00-02 aluminums I got for $free.99, with lug nuts, come to find out I didn't need to buy the new lug nuts, as the ones I had would work...

Yup, apoligies for not sorting out that last mess, I was under a Yukon when I typed it  Yes, the lug nuts that you have with the '06 wheels might work when you upgrade to the 9/16" studs, I'd still check to be certain. If they are proper, then that saves some $$$, IIRC, the lug nuts I decided on were about $2 a piece. I know I spent around $200 for everything, and that included new wheel seals and a few cans of brake cleaner ;)

For my newer rims i have to run a wheel spacer so i was thinking they shouldn't stick out any longer 1.5 inches because thats the thickness of the spacer? So would i be best off taking some studs out and go to the parts store to find what i want?

FYI, if you want to keep all the lug nuts the same as the rear, a Chevy 1 ton stud from a '91 K series (4wd) will fit in the Dodge hub.
It uses the same shank with the smaller thread diameter (9/16" instead of 5/8").

quote from Mr. Nixon himself

edit... to clarify, this is when i went from d70 to d80 in the rear, so my lugs in the back are 9/16 and fronts are still half

IIRC, I ended up using the same studs as a Chevy K30/V30. Since there is little difference in the Chevy Dana 60 to Dodge Dana 60, the studs from the K30 should work. As long as the shank size is appropriate, you can run any diameter of stud ;)
