Steering Shaft

Postby sb91ctd » Thu Dec 29, 2011 4:40 pm

Anyone have the problem on your steering shaft right before it goes into the box, a small shaft going into a larger shaft, i have a ton of play here and i believe that is the main cause of the hellacious shake around 40, front tires are shot and i know that it plays a roll as well. Anywho who else has encountered this and what course of action did you take?

Sounds like you need to rebuild your slip joint. Its a common issue, I do mine almost annually. The parts are dealer only but only run about $30-40.
There are alternatives which involve replacing the entire steering shaft from the box to the column. I'm ordering a borgeson hd replacement shaft tomorrow (000943= double u joint hd shaft that eliminates the slip joint and rag joint. 000940= single u joint shaft that retains the factory rag joint but eliminates the slip joint) they run around $180-200. Which is only a little more than what I have into slip joint rebuild parts to date

You can get the rebuild for the slip joint at Autozone...

Lemme guess... For about half the dealer price? Figures, I was told it was dealer only by the parts store I usually use

To the op, dont forget to inspect the rag joint to if your rebuilding the stocker. the rebuild is pretty darn easy, and I hear that some guys drill and trap for a grease fitting while its all apart so they can grease it regularly

Try 1/3 the price. $11.xx Since I can now order McMaster Carr stuff through work at a discount, I am going to measure the shaft and buy a Ujoint for $40-$50.

Any part numbers? I noticed the same problem tonight on my 92. I'm sure I can find it (I do work at a parts house) but if you already looked it up that would be easier. Thanks

Wait, what play do you mean? I don't have much play side to side, but up and down is pretty sloppy. Turning side to side in niltch though. Also my truck is lifted 4 inches.
